thoughts on the county for the end of the month
« on: Mar 20, 2017, 11:14 AM »
I know conditions are solid now and I also know a lot can change in a couple weeks, but wondering what peoples thoughts are on crossing Square come the 30th through April 2nd.  I am guessing it will still be ok.  We have done that weekend the last couple years and although we have ridden through some water on the way out, there has always been plenty of ice.  The last couple years that weekend has also been great for riding sleds as well so I guess we will see.  Thanks

With the amount of ice we have now along with colder temps the middle of this week I am thinking you will have no trouble the end of the month. If you have a mind to  you could probably make the same  trip the end of April as well.  @)

I have ice fished in April every year since the law was changed to allow it. Most years I fish until about April 15. The latest was April 22 and this year has the potential to beat that.

I will be ice fishing in April also, just not on Square.  I have always thought to Ice fish the last day and then snowmobile over to the thoroughfare and wet a line on the first.  I think that would be cool but have yet to do it.  Maybe this is the year

Actually there are between 25-30 lakes/ponds in Aroostook county that are open to ice fishing in the month of April.

Fish them on the same day. Thorofares fall under the same rules as the bodies of water that are connected by them. Any water open to ice fishing is also legal for open water fishing. When you apply both of those rules it means many thoroughfares are open to fly fishing most of the year.

From Page 3 of the 2017 Law Book:

Lakes & Ponds

NORTH REGION LAKES & PONDS
• From April 1 – September 30: Open to
open water fishing under general law
terminal gear, bag, and length limits.
• From October 1 – March 31: Closed to open
water and ice fishing.

SOUTH REGION LAKES & PONDS
• January 1 – December 31: Open to ice
and open water fishing under general law
terminal gear, bag, and length limits.

Says the North Region is CLOSED to Ice Fishing October 1 to March 31  ??? ??? ??? ??? ???  I guess you guys up north are all going to get arrested!

They know the law as it is interpreted ,   I'm not interested in a ticket why I asked him.

NORTHERN & WESTERN COUNTIES
Waters open to ice fishing are listed with an A or a B code which defines
the winter fishing season. All other waters are closed to ice fishing.

SEASON DATE CODES

A: Open to ice fishing and open water fishing for all fish from
December 1 - April 30.
B: Open to ice fishing and open water fishing from January 1
- March 31.
CI: Closed to ice fishing.
CO: Closed to open water fishing from October 1 - March 31.
(Note: Special rules may restrict the general law fishing
provisions.)

I have pulled up the law book and just is not easy any more. the links I pulled up don't list abc . and when you look at laws there are still previous years listed. Which no one needs to see. Just a screwed up law book listing!!!!!!!!!!

In an effort to improve my public relation skills:

If you go to this link

http://www.maine.gov/ifw/fishing/laws/pdfs/2017fishinglawbook.pdf

And go to page 3/70 title General Fishing Laws for Inland Waters, you will see the special codes for the state (blue box bottom of page).  That includes S codes and Special season codes A, B, CI, and CO.

Then as you go down through to page 5 and beyond you will see an alphabetical listing of lakes.  This is an example:

ARNOLD BROOK LAKE, Presque Isle (North
Region). General fishing laws apply, except: A.
S-19. Motorboats over 10 horsepower
prohibited. Open to open water fishing from
October 1 - November 30 and open to ice fishing
in November: S-6, S-7.

Arnold Brook Lake is a Class A lake meaning it is open to icefishing until April 30th and the daily bag limit on trout is 2 (S-19).  You are also allowed to open water or icefish in November but with artificial lures only and all trout, togue and salmon released alive (S-6 and S-7).

Presque isle is in Aroostook County.

Carry on.

If you go to this link:

http://www.maine.gov/ifw/fishing/laws/pdfs/2017fishinglawbook.pdf

On page 4/70, titled HOW TO USE THIS BOOK, it indicates that the state is broken into two regions, North and South.  Under each region there is a list of counties.  For example, Cumberland County is located in the south region.

If you then go to page 5 and beyond, there is an alphabetical listing of lakes and special codes.  Here is an example:

ALDENS POND, Gorham (South Region).
General fishing laws apply, except: CI. S-9.

Aldens Pond is located in Gorham (Cumberland County-south region).  Closed to icefishing (CI), Open to fishing for those under 16 years of age and some other stipulations (S-9).

Really is that simple.

I'm just here to read what all the experts have to say.
