What’s The Safest Part of Ice Fishing?
« on: Mar 18, 2017, 10:27 PM »

Every year you hear of unfortunate and even devastating things happening while ice fishing.

Of course there are risks in every activity and I feel there is even greater risk in no activity.

Just curious what you think are some of the safest aspects of ice fishing?

Thanks!

Couple or four miles of walking a few times a week would keep most people safer through health.. If you did fall through, you're far better off if you're in good shape and health..

Also way safer to be on the ice than in a mall, school, or hospital catching something other than fish..

I think the safest part of ice fishing is the new technology in floatable suits, they have helped and saved lives
since their induction to our sport!  :flex:

Safe is a relative term. The moment you step off of ice onto land. Would be the safest part.

I think knowing at all times that the ice is never safe is one. Spud bars should never be overlooked, or picks.

Not sure what the "safest part" of ice fishing is. Though its safe to say I'll have a good time  @).

The most dangerous part honestly is probably the drive to and from the ice. Driving is by far the most dangerous activity most humans do much of.

Safest part is checking conditions online, because we all know that the internet doesn't lie!

Seriously, safest thing is to due your own research, be it online or at the water's edge, and take every step to keep safe!

Took my nephew out this weekend for his first excursion on the ice..EVER.
I drilled it into him about safety, and we ended up catching a bunch of fish (mostly small ones) and he had a blast!

Safest is dreaming about ice fishing. Watching it online could cause eye strain and the multitude of things that could happen going to a store is endless.

There are lots of safety factors. A good set of ice cleats is one. I had a cheap set that didn't even have any cleats on the heels. the things were deadly. You could have 2 or 3 ft of solid black ice under you and feel totally safe but a slip on the ice can be devastating.

Great to hear!!

Story?

It's unfortunate, but I know of plenty of people that never leave their house, and because of that, they now, should never leave their house...

Read my mind Scratcher.  ;D Is it as creepy in there as I think it is?? ??  :P

@ BC Kyle: You, sir, are absolutely correct! Once you get on the ice you're safer than you are behind the wheel or even as a passenger.

Ice Scratcher, you are my sarcastic friend  ;D Why does everything  have to be safe anyway ? Not saying anyone should be reckless on crappy ice, but once you determine that the ice is safe, everything else is up to your actions, for whether things are safe or not. I have done a lot of ice camping, and there is risk inherent with this, a snowmobile may rip through your Shappel, or the ice may unexpectedly open up under you while you are sleeping.

Part of what we like about this sport is that it is inherently risky - minimizing the risk is what we try to do.
The Ultimate Warrior is possessed with great power from the heavens above ! Against the mighty lake trout and pike and schools of crappie, the power of the WARRIOR will always ......... PREVAIL !!!

Keeping things done on my wife's "To do" list is what keeps coming home from  ice fishing safe. Because if I'm ice fishing and there are things that need to be done at home, coming back home from doing ANYTHING ELSE that's fun can be EXTREMELY DANGEROUS!!!

i recently took a guy from California out here in Sask. Canada that had never been on ice or ice fishing before....i think he would say the safest part of ice fishing would be sitting in the truck on shore. It took him a while to follow us out. I recall one of his statements to us was...."you mo fo's are crazy"
