Safe ice within 2 hours of Potsdam

I have this week off and want to fish.  I'm from buffalo but have a friend in Potsdam I can stay with.   I am looking for suggestions on lakes to try out.   I really don't care what there is to fish for.    Fishing for 6 inch perch is better than not fishing.   I know there is not a lot of safe ice so any advice is very appreciated.

Go to waddington, ny ...half hour trip ... Plenty of ice at brandy brook and other bays ...
