The prohibition on the use or possession of smelt in Lake George has been removed and smelt may now be caught by angling.

Really.   If we don't protect our resources we can loose them.   The problem is if every person takes too many fish the fisheries will be wiped out.   We need to loose the there are plenty of fish mindset.   I have was tched ponds and loose decent fishing because people kept all the females and over took their limits to sell thwm .   be responsible and protect your resources because most people don't care

However, there will be a season and a daily limit.

You're better off letting the trophy go and keeping the small ones.  The big ones lay all the eggs.  They've also accumulated all the pollution.

in a put and take stream which most trout waters are  your better of letting people take more 9 inch year olds then the  12 to 16 inch 2 year olds.......if you stop people from catching diner they will stop buying a license which means no money for stocking  and  no funds  for  dec officers....you need to understand  your morality is not  always the wisest  thing to do ...........if the law says a 15 inch walleye  there is a reason .... Oneida  sticks  150 million  walleyes  they  also  supply another  150 million   walleyes  to stock around the  state ...lot of license get sold   yo people  to go  catch 3  walleyes, those people are supporting the  walleye stocking state wide ...you really want to lose that money? again most walleyes are a put and take  fishery ...thanks to good management............ .....you want to improve your fishery  ? take a trash bag with you .....call and  volunteer some time to stock ...take some kids fishing .....lot better things to do then worry about another mans diner plate and his legal limit ....and one more thing that guy  has just as much right to enjoy the fishery  as you .............EAT FISH LIVE LONGER ........ask your doctor

I've frequently wondered if there would be a better result if they stocked fewer. Larger fish, than 10s of thousands of expensive bird food.

Well the reason the size limit on walleyes in Oneida went from 18" to 15" was to take some of the pressure off the prime spawners which I believe are 17-22" , Oneida far as I can see from many  years of fishing Oneida  is well managed and healthy , this lake generates between 15mil -20mil annually , and is one of the most fished inland lakes in the country

I'd rather keep 100 15" walleye than one monster that could be a record some day. Any pike under about 30" I'm eating. Any barely legal bass gets eaten too. Panfish I keep only the big ones but as for everything else I'll keep as many smaller ones as I can. Like trapper has said millions of times in his life. "Do as YOU wish, but don't tell ME what to do!" If what I'm doing is illegal call the cops. Keeping legal fish is not the issue at all. I've never heard any serious biology specialist show me anything that said keeping a legal limit of fish is a serious problem. I've seen many ponds over populated with stunted bass and pike. Hate to break the news to you but the only thing that could help is if somebody caught and kept the small ones, or there is a very large die off. Then size and health of the fish bounce back. Many older fisherman that have seen 30-60 years of fishing have told me that when there was no limit to panfish they were bigger and healthier. Everyone has there opinion. But opinions are mainly based on feelings and not true facts. Show me facts that keeping smaller fish is destroying the fishing and I would stop. But honestly anybody who's oppinion is fishing sucks in New York probably doesn't know enough about fishing in NY to change my opinion anyway. Like trapping, there are rules and regulations set to manage the populations. Trapping does not make there less animals in the woods. It actually increases the population of healthy animals. So if you work for a wildlife agency who has done netting and counted fish population in regards to small fish being taken then please post all data to support your theories. Till then I believe the exact opposite of what you believe. Keeping small fish helps the population. And if god didn't want me to keep them then he wouldn't have made the smaller ones taste better. Same as deer, I feel taking a yearling doe doesn't hurt the population as much as a giant old goat. The yearling would almost definitely not be calving in the spring. So you just took one from the herd. Take the old nasty goat and you just took her and her 2 fawns from the herd. How is that better? One fawn vs 2 fawns and old doe from the herd. Of course that's my opinion and what I do. Not that I won't take an old doe if I had to, but I'd rather take fawns. As long as there legal and tagged who cares? If you really wanted to make a difference do like was said. Go clean up the shore, go to the downwind side of a lake and clean up the trash piled up there. That would actually make a difference.
