First time Devils Lake
« on: Feb 23, 2017, 11:03 AM »
2 friends and I are going to DL March 3-6. Couple of questions. Best bait shop to get advice or better yet any to stay away from. Second - evening meals(we are in hotel not resort) good places to eat? Does anyplace cook your fish like they do in Chamberlain SD? Thanks for any help or advice.

I'm heading there throughout the same time period. I will usually eat at the casino pretty OK buffet. Ed's bait shop is good and they have a nice public cleaning station.

We are heading there about the same time and was wondering about lake travel also.  Can trucks get around or wheelers?  Sorry old school not trying to high jack your post.

I was wondering the same thing. We are bringing 4 wheelers but if we can use the truck that would be easier.

Hey guys, ill be up around the same time, well Sun-Thurs, fishing is always better after the weekend ive found. Travel should be good, the snow melted and has refroze well making truck travel possible. For bait shops you don't really have many options, besides Eds and or some of the gas stations carry bait. Best piece of advice is to study up on some of the contours and be prepared to drill. With that said I did here N 6 mile was doing ok. In the morns go shallow for your eyes and spend the rest of the day drilling until about an hr from dark and set up again for eyes. Buckshot with minnow head has always been a go to on DL. I cant tell you where to eat bc we norm stay at Lake View Lodge and cook our own food. I do not believe any places will cook your catch but if you have someone in your group with a deep fryer why not bring it and do it in the parking lot, that's we plan to do. Also be careful a sled and 2 wheelers went through the ice, both on 6 mile I believe. Not bc the ice was bad but bc they were in spots that never freeze up well. Good luck and if you get desperate let me know and ill see if I can help you out a little bit more, remember its a big lake and can be an unforgiving fishery.

I am going up for the very first time with a group of guys March 10-12th. We normally fish SD glacial lakes if we travel out of  state to fish so none of us have ever gone the extra 3+ hours to Devils.  No ice left in Iowa and SD is sketchy at best so we are willing to gamble on Devils this year. If anyone has any information on places to start or where we can find Perch and Walleyes that would be awesome. It's a 9-10hour drive for a couple of the guys going so if we could get on fish on the first day that would be awesome. We will probably just have trucks but working in getting a couple snowmobiles lined up if needed. Feel free to PM me if you don't want to post anything public. Thanks

Fished the 13th - 16 th with a guide on Devils lake.
Our best perch action was Thursday in 39 ft of water out from the Spirit Lake casino.

Pink Lindy flyer 1/8 oz with minnow hooked through the head out the mouth worked well for me. Took perch and walleye.

Didn't mark any waypoints on the handheld gps or I would share.Fished the far west side in 11 ft of water and did good from 3-6 pm for walleye Monday. Took a couple of Northerns also.

Trucks without tracks were getting around pretty good.

Not much, but hope it helps.

Nice Mexican restaurant across from Fireside Inn where we stayed. definitely recommend.
pizza Ranch buffet was good also. Chicken was delicious and so was the salad bar.Pizza was good also.

Have fun

Any reports from this weekend? I am making a long 11 hour drive from college up there for the first time ever on Thursday after my last class. Planning on fishing Friday through Sunday and going home on Monday. The group I am meeting there has no experience on the lake so just looking for where to start and what baits are working.

Stop in at Eds bait shop . They can give you some good info . Hard lake to fish if you never been there.  We did well last month but had to work for the perch .

Drill Drill Drill. We didn't catch limits but the ones we caught were nice fish. 1 - 14" and 1 - 15" perch. A lot over 10". 30 to 40 feet of water. We fished 6 mile south of the bridge and South end of Creel at the edge of the main lake. Talked to some guys that fished stump lake and did well, not the size we had but limits. They said the access to stump lake was getting bad.
