short season?
« on: Feb 20, 2017, 11:08 AM »
So will the temps this week put the season in jeopardy of being done too soon?
What is the long term forecast after this week of well above freezing temps?

I just hit a pond that is usually good ice early until late season.
Very little good ice. All white shaley garbage except for 1 or 2" of good ice.
I've been ice fishing for over 50 years my opinion it's going quick.
Be safe!

Not looking too good.  Granted I was on 14" of ice this weekend, but it was mostly white ice full of air bubbles.  Couple of days with sun, wind, warm temps and a little rain will surely eat it up fast.  Gotta start watching those shorelines or bring a plank!

Seems every year the season starts later and ends earlier.......Remember the days fishing into April?  I do !

Stay safe out there!!
The closest flag up may be the one that is behind you !

Long term forecast has 50's this week, nothing below freezing at night, next week highs on the 40's with mid teens at night.
Week of the 5th highs just below freezing and night temps low teens.
Fingers crossed next 2 weeks lows hold up and it stays cloudy!

I missed my favorite week with the flu and passed on last weekends slush fest. I have a couple
of trips planned this May an June including a fly in. Its not worth risking a swim.

Went out on Monkton Pond New Year's Eve and got off to a good start, but then haven't been able to get out ice fishing since. There were a couple of boat trips in January, but no room in the schedule since. I'd really like to get out on the ice this year.  :-\
May the fish be with you.

Sucks but pulling my shack in the am. 3 days of 50 and some rain isn't going to be good. Figure I can always put it back out if things change around. Kinda puts a damper on my plan for the nek derby

Took a trip down south in the Vergennes area to my normal hot spots when it warms up. Never even came close to freezing over this year.

I too am pulling my shack this morning while temps are cold and slush is frozen. Hoping it's not the end of fishing this year! Ice  never got thicker than 8 inches anywhere I have fished and the 50's forecast this week don't look good at all...

I went crappie fishing last night, with the thought it might be my last time out.  I haven't fished on more than 12in of ice all season, and what I have been fishing on is getting soft fast.

I packed most my stuff away. With 60degrees in the forecast I'll be getting the boat ready and tying some big pike food!!

Here in Pennsylvania most of the ice has gone bad and the handful that still have ice will probably be unsafe by the end of the week.   I've been ice fishing since 1996 and unless we get a major cold spell in March this will the shortest season I've ever had.  The only close to good thing with our season ending so soon is all the ice will be all gone relatively quickly and we'll be able to get out on the boats.   :'(

Successfully pulled it off. Guess I'd rather look dumb for taking it off early than look like a fool who didn't 😃
Season isn't over but I've seen this lake fall apart in less than 24hrs before.

I have my Jackson SUPerfishal paddleboard that I will have no problem loading my auger and tipups on to get to the ice.  :P

Or maybe you don't know how to read a tape measure and enjoy giving people false ice reports!! Not a good idea as people rely on this site for safety purposes

people post 9" I tend to round it off to about 6 or so, and then if I go I can be pleasantly surprised if there really is 9".

I measured 9 inches of ice Tuesday morning on east side along the road.  I went down yesterday morning and only measured 5 inches in same spot. There was 10 inches in that spot the weekend after the derby. I always tell people to check as they go. Ice can be and is variable especially there...

I fished Mallets bay launch. There were maybe half dozen people out there. Slow bite all dinks. The ice is not looking good. Then fished colchester pond. One other group out there. Ice is going fast. Was fun being out in the warm weather though. Probably my last trip on the hard water this season.

Yesterday was most likely my last day, and it was a good one. BG's bit hard all day. Great way to end the season with good friends.

I've never actually bothered to measure the ice.

If it's solid- doesn't bounce when I walk on it, and takes at least a minute to hand-drill a hole at some near-shore, but not right off the access point- location, I'll look down into the hole and check the ice. I feel okay about 6" of solid ice but I feel a lot better about 12.

I've never bothered to get down there with a tape measure.
May the fish be with you.

I drove by Dunmore  Friday afternoon and it was socked in with fog. Yesterday is was black and spongy and starting to break apart by the shore. I bet the Middlebury Crew will be rowing by the weekend.
