Asking "how long will the ice be safe" is a difficult question to answer since there are so many variables to that question. Sure, temperatures have a lot to do with it, but so does the weather, natural springs, water temp and fluctuation, snow cap, ice rot and a whole bunch of other things that can contribute to unsafe ice. Best bet is to be cautious, and if in doubt, stay off of it! As much as I love the sport of ice fishing, NO fish is worth risking my safety or life. Ski

Still 16" at one of the local perch lakes here.  Best ice in 5 years, at least.  Going as much as I can, 'cause last year was about nonexistent.

here's the thing guys, don't get caught up in the "inches of ice thing" You might have 10" of hard ice and walk out all happy and drill holes and spend the day on the ice but as you're walking off that 10" of hard ice will have been getting hit my sun and water runoff. It can go soft and sink under your weight. When that happens you get wet or worse. Last year 4 young guys were fishing on ice they thought was "safe enough". But when they were leaving it sunk under them and they all went in. Fortunately they were all rescued, one just barely, but it could have been tragic.

Just because there's ice, doesn't mean it's safe. If it makes you nervous at any time, trust your instincts and get off.

Weather changes here in Utah more than I change my underwear. Been float tubing in Feb on lakes that should be frozen until May. I also have ice fished the first week of May on lakes that usually ice off around 2nd to 3rd week of May. Skied at Snowbird twice on 4th of July.  Utah Lake is ice free, but may freeze back up this week. Snow and cold temps happening right now.
