Lost a good one
« on: Feb 14, 2017, 11:05 AM »

My good friend Bob Dunham, AKA thresher,  lost a very short battle with cancer.

If you were one of the folks that got to meet him, it didn't take long to realize that catching fish was just a bonus, there is lot more to fishing than just catching fish and Bob had that figured out a long time ago.

He was a great friend and an incredible family man and will be missed  by many.

Bob... I hope them togue don't think they are safe now!!!

I met Bob only once and it was a time I will never forget.

My buddy broke our nils auger one day on the 2nd hole last season.  We put up a post about anyone in the area with a auger willing to lend a hand on here. Well never before talking with bob he answered that message and drove out of his way about 45 minutes to bring a couple of strangers his auger to drill some holes with.  He wouldn't take anything in return other then a hand shake. What a great person.  RIP

It's always a shame when someone passes well before their time.

The best you can hope for (and seems evident from reading the earlier posts) is to leave lasting memories with friends, relatives and loved ones.

Sounds like he will be with you for a long, long time!

When dealing with terminal illness issues (my dad passed in 2001 from cancer) is that if the person has no chance of survival, that they don't suffer a long and agonizing ordeal. I've seen friends that held on for a long time and suffered terribly before succumbing, and I've seen people (my dad) who passed quickly and relatively painlessly. To this day I credit my dad for instilling my love of fishing, to which I do what I can to instill it in others.

As long as he is remembered, he will never truly be gone!

God bless, and T & P's sent.

He was at my house getting ready to go fishing and saw that post on my computer, all he said was "hey..you got your auger right...I gotta go"...and left...he never said a word about it until I asked him where went in such a hurry...I could tell you dozens of those kind of stories about Bob

A picture is worth a 1000 words. RIP to an incredible soul.
May God bless and keep you always, may your wishes all come true.
May you always do for others and let others do for you.
May you build a ladder to the stars and climb on every rung,
May your hands always be busy, may your feet always be swift.
May you have a strong foundation when the winds of changes shift.
May your heart always be joyful, may your songs always be sung.
May you stay forever young.

The jig holes in scallopers shack are called  Dunham holes...when I built it Bob said he wouldn't set foot in it if he couldn't jig in it...should have seen it when he fell asleep jigging for cusk and a laker took off with his jig and pulled the rod right out of his hands.

A lot of little things are clicking into place now.  All the little things he did to make everyone around him be better, that's the kind of man I want to be.

I'm sorry to hear about the loss - but I'm glad for the inspiration.

I've got a special "raise a glass" moment coming soon - I'll include him in my speech.
Trust me, when the Zamboni driver says "You won't catch fish through that hole", he knows of what he speaks.

Bob was the one who taught me the art of fly rod drifting in New York. When the fish weren't coming I would fish harder to try and compensate. Bob, instead; would go and sit on a rock for an hour and have a conversation with someone. When the fish came back through, he would get up throw a cast or two, make an adjustment, make another cast and be hooked up on a steelhead. Bob carried that sensible patience with him everywhere he went in life.

Ah! He was a good flosser! Did you learn well, Grasshopper Dylan? I hope we all can live as fully as Bob did. I wish I had met the man! Quite the smile on the boy! Looks like it was stuck on there!  :angel

I've had a few people ask about donating to a charity in Bobs name, he had talked about getting involved with Healing waters fly fishing, here is the link to their donation page and also a link to their home page.

https://donatenow.networkforgood.org/projecthealingwatersflyfishing

http://www.projecthealingwaters.org

Even if you don't wish to donate I encourage you to check them out.

Thanks for all of the kind comments, the PMs have been awesome, I can assure you that I will pass them along to Bobs family in due time.

Have also had folks asking about his services, this is the announcement with the details,  and a wonderful poem that my wife had seen a long time ago, thought it would be appropriate for this occasion.
