Another rare fish through the ice
« on: Feb 13, 2017, 12:34 PM »
Just saw this fish that was caught during the Islands Derby on Facebook. Whoa!

"What a derby we are having! Big, healthy fish and extraordinary species. Rich Rose of Grand Isle landed this beautiful sturgeon, about 4' and easily 30lbs, cut the tangled line, snapped a pic and sent it right back down the hole to swim away. Wow! #IslandsIceDerby #Sturgeon" - Islands Ice Fishing Derby Facebook https://www.facebook.com/IslandsIceFishingDerby/photos/a.1323834730984348.1073741829.1323601011007720/1430909540276866/?type=3&theater

That is a lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens). Same fish as in Wisconsin. Our population is fairly small and can't support a recreational fishery at this point. Wisconsin has enough to allow for fishing for them. There is hope here that the population is rebounding. It would be great to see a couple of the dams that stop the fish from getting to their spawning habitat go though. Peterson is the biggest problem but that has been re licensed for about 50 years.

I saw one about this size jump clear out of the water near the fill north side of the causeway. Quite a sight.

Sturgeon gulp air - I saw one about 6' long gulping on the Merrimack R. in the Newburyport area.  Between Chain and Rt 1 bridges...

I also know of one flyfisher catching one on Joppa Flats about 7 years ago - No fish were harmed in the observations and reports of the fish caught.

Dams would be a lot less hateable if they were required to have fish ladders.
May the fish be with you.

??? ::)  Few years ago we had one come directly at the boat while we were fishing Malletts Bay.   Looked like a small shark fin coming from 100 yards away but as it turned just 50 feet from the boat it was obviously a 6 or 7 ft long Lake Sturgeon.   I was humming the theme from Jaws as it came at the boat ;D   I hope they make a comeback.   In Maine , on the lower Kennebek  river we watch short nosed sturgeon  breach almost every 15 minutes??    I think all of my group have snagged one while jigging for stripers.   When one is snagged someone will yell "gator" and follow the fish down the beach until it can be released or breaks the line?

Again, I did not take this picture or catch this fish. Just sharing a post I saw elsewhere. Cool catch for sure!

Well, seeing as how it was on the Islands Derby page which is viewable to the public, I highly doubt it.

Can you please explain and maybe include a quote from the regs if possible?  I know in MA you can't take it out of the water at all for any reason.

Thanks.

Not sure if this is 100% accurate, but states the fish must be released "immediately". If it was just a quick pic that was snapped, I doubt the state would come after you. If it died however, that might be a different story.
