lost ice scenario?
« on: Feb 13, 2017, 09:47 AM »
Forecast shows a few very warm days coming up, like mid 40s to even 50 by weekend and sustained for 3-4 days. How much ice will we lose? Time to start thinking of removing heavy permanent shanties or will a few warm days just soften a bit but still be safe in your opinion if it gets back to 20s or low 30s after the warm spell?

How much ice do you currently have and is it snow covered? These two things will be big factors in ice loss.
Hug a firefighter and feel warm all over.

Time to put away the sleds and shanties and break out the Harley Davidson

The ice will soften and the shore will recede, if it opens up, then we'll need a miracle for another freeze up. Maybe March will come in like a lion, I hope
If it passes the ruler test, put it in the ice chest. Hook it and cook it.

You do run the risk of having the permanent refreeze solid to the ice after the thaw and then it cannot be moved without damage if it freezes hard when it needs to be removed.

As goofy as the winters have been over there on the west side I have not seen permanents in many years.

If I had a permy I would pull it before the warmup. It is going to be sunny and very warm. The next cool down is back to single digits and you will probably be able to get it back out. I remember trying to move one that had melted in and froze, lets just say it didn't make it out in one piece...
