i know some fisherman that use hot dogs, liver, pepperoni, shrimp. and you name it for catfish on champlain in ny. why would hot dogs be illegal? why is corn illegal on a hook on champlain? everyone uses it for carp. probably not legal in trout ponds. your question is a good one. if its not mentioned in the bait laws i would think it would be legal.

make sure you don't mix brands and packages and definitely, absolutely, under no circumstances, never use hot dogs from different stores on more than one body of water!   ;)

In seriousness, I use them sometimes for perch and panfish and am not aware of any legal concerns. salt pork and bacon work too.
May the fish be with you.

Hot dogs are completely legal. The bait laws are based on whole fish not processed meat. I find that if I want to chum in bowfin hot dogs are freakin' amazing! I have heard that a couple of LCI guys chasing bowfin swear by hot dogs.

BTW- the cheaper and nastier the better!

Make sure you keep your receipt for proof of purchase too!  Or else risk a fine!

It's not illegal. I would never use it but still not illegal. They've done hatchery studies with fish fed only whole cornel corn vs. fish fed only pellets. The fish fed only corn did have a harder time digesting the corn but none died throughout the study that lasted almost a year.  They did say the growth rate of the corn fed fish was substantially less than that of the fish fed pellets. Can't be as bad as all the plastics that get stuck in them!!

The question is exactly how much corn from your hook actually gets into fish bellies and stays there, since most people using it are fishing for perch and panfish, and taking their catch home. Their objective isn't generally "feeding" the fish.

Those starch-ball-egg baits powerbait makes are probably not better for the fish.
May the fish be with you.

I've had luck catching perch while jigging with hot dogs.  I recommend natural casing because the perch will constantly steal your bait if you use the non casing variety.

Back when they had bacon ends and pieces available, a pound of that would last a dozen fishing trips. Everybody likes bacon, and fish are no exception. :)

Just think, if the fish aren't biting you can nibble on your bait ! :)

as long as the material is "accidentally" dropped and a "reasonable" effort to retrieve it is made. ;)

Otherwise you're littering.

Personally, when I was younger (probably right after I saw Jaws) I thought the idea of chumming was cool, but as time went by I came to the conclusion that having a bunch of food in the water didn't necessarily increase the chances of a fish wanting to eat the small bit of food on my hook.

I once reeled in a women's nylon full of dog food or something in it.  I was on Magog by the islands fishing for smelt with ultralight gear.

I would like to know, do you use the whole hot dog or do you break off a piece?  I guess if you use the whole one you could use a quick strike set up.
