Time for a funeral, wear your black
« on: Feb 02, 2017, 12:29 PM »
It's dead in here. I can hear the low organ music, smell that odd smell mixed with flowers. Precious memories, how they linger...

There is more talk of open water fishing  than ice fishing.

It's attributed to "global warming"  :o

7° this morning here, still driving trucks all over the ice. Towards the end of next week the weather guesser's say things might change. I'll believe it when I see it gone, not a really good year for ice but not the worst. It's not global warming it's weather, it changes  day to day, year to year.

I have yet to see a "polar vortex" this year!

We had a polar vortex. It only lasted a day or two.

I am heading out the door to hit a pond south of Cedar Rapids. I hate to agree with the pessimists, but based on the current forecasts this may indeed be my last weekend on the ice this far south this winter.

What do you consider a "polar vortex " ?  Why use that phase anyway, did you here on TV to hype up a cold spell a few yrs ago?  I remember ice 20+" on Big Creek in the 90's. In '08 or '10 lakes up in northern iowa had ice so long and thick there was lots of winter kill.  Coldest this winter up here is -24, is that a so called "polar vortex" ?

I was on 8-9" in the QC today. We will be on the ice next weekend for sure, not sure how much longer than that for this spot though. I was told my late ice spot has 12"+ still, so might have to check that out after next weekend.

I was on 6" of decent ice on a small pond in northern Johnson County Sunday night. No cracking at shore or over the deeper water I was fishing.

I went back yesterday at 5:00 PM, thinking I could get one more outing before it went bad. Wrong.

Six or eight hours of above-freezing temps had turned the shoreline ice to mushy crap. It settled and cracked everywhere I put a foot on it, and one or two hits of the spud bar went right through anywhere I could reach. The ice over the deeper water may have been in better shape, but I was not about to find out for sure.

The pond that was a no-go last night was in better shape on Saturday than a couple others I looked at, which had nothing but skim ice near shore.

If anyone hasn't heard, two guys took a cold bath Sunday (before the warmup) on the south arm of Macbride. They got out fine.

Long story short, unless there is a long cold spell coming soon that none of the current seven, ten, or fifteen day forecasts can see, I am done ice fishing south of Cedar Rapids for this winter.

Guy went in at Ft DesMoines pond yesterday, got out ok .   Head North  for good ice. Even then it looks to be short year.

I'm done for this ice season, took a lot of my new toys out today, Atv, camera, flx28, rods/reels. The ice is still 18-19 inches but starting to get bad and water is going through. The temps are supposed to be 60 or so for the next 6 days. Wish I had a shaded spot so I could fish a few more weeks.

Are you talking about Clear Lake when you say the 18-19 inches of ice is going bad?

There is rain forecast for Monday for NE Iowa. Maybe up to 1/3 of an inch.

They may have enough ice up that way in places to withstand the temps this weekend, but a decent amount of rain on top of it will probably put an end to ice-fishing up there, too.

Like wise here too.  Couple days ago started cleaning out and cleaning up my stuff from the truck.  A week and a half ago I was on 15" up North but I'm done for the year unfortunatley.
