« on: Feb 02, 2017, 07:39 AM »
Just wondering what everybody's opinion is about the best braided line pike fishing spiderwire and powerpro seem like I like the Power Pro better, does anyone just Ty The lure to the braided line without a steel leader?

Anything but mono is miserable to use if you are jigging in below freezing temperatures... line on your spool freezes, ALL your guides freeze up instead of just the tip...just my opinion.

x3... the line holds water and freezes fast, then it won't spool tight and freezes on the spool and you'll hate it. Might be able to just use braided as your leader, but would probably sill lose some fish... and some gear. You'd have to really inspect your line after each fish to make sure it's not frayed anywhere.

I like fireline. All the benefits of braid without dealing with the freezing line.

I use 6lb fireline crystal fused exclusively on my ice fishing rods. I have no real issues with freeze up until the line starts to wear significantly, then it will pickup and hold water worse than usual. I find that the no stretch quality of braid or fused far outweigh the inconvenience of a little ice up. I have had problems with traditional braided lines like power pro, even the power pro ice is a bit inconvenient. I can't stand the stretch of monofilament, I personally have no use for it on any of my gear, hard water or soft water. I use power pro exclusively on all of my open water gear, and fireline on ice rods. As far as leaders I use 6lb, 10lb, or 20lb fluorocarbon depending on the application. I tie this directly to my main line using a modified Albright knot, or a uni to uni knot.

I have been using fireline and will probably stick with that on the ice

I use a little of both
Mono is way easier, like everyone said with freezing and knots
But past 40 feet I like using Braid for more sensitivity

Fished in -15 degrees this morning for lake trout in 100 fow. Slight freeze up issue on reel, but very minor. I have done this for years and will never go back to mono, too much stretch for solid hooking. I use both Spider Wire and Power Pro. Less ice growth on the Spider above the hole and ice does not adhere to it as firmly as the Power Pro. Power pro is a bit more limp and spools better. Just my long term observations. I use level wind reels for this stuff.

For the big fish...Power Pro.  For perch, Walleye, Trout, the mono or Fluorocarbon.

I have Power Pro on 4 reels for ice fishing and it holds the toothy fish without a steel leader.  Same hook and knot all winter so far for the toothies.

EDIT:  I use power pro only on bait cast style reels.
EDIT AGAIN:  My power pro lines are 4 years olds.
wish you many hook-ups
