Transporting one man with atv on rack or tow?
« on: Jan 23, 2017, 10:07 PM »
Looking at a one man shelter and have always towed them but with a tracked atv and warm weather the sled get so wet and thought it might be better on a rack, thoughts?

I have an atv with the big jet sled. I use the cover that covers the whole top of the sled. It works well for keeping out snow and water. . With this slop we have here in ny water will pool on top of it but won't go into the sled . I kinda build my gear up so it runs off . Works great in snow also.

Adding skis to a sled isn't going to keep water from going in it ...

Lifting a sled 3 -4 inches isn't going to anything for water and snow getting into the sled. The water / snow rooster tails off the tires / tracks into the sled. My wheeler throws a 4 foot rooster tails in this slop

Not sure about Minnesota but in ny it has to be a ridged mount like a tow bar.  Plus if you have to stop quick you'll have your stuff all ove the ice lol  :-\

Check this out, they have one shanty rack that mounts to the hitch receiver that looks like an awesome idea! And others...

I have been pulling my shack with my atv for years with no problems. The chains on the tires can really send a spray behind so I use a cover for my otter sled that keeps water and ice out and alot more mobile then mounted on the atv.

I ratchet strap my 1 man flipover on the back rack turned 90 degrees. I have gun racks mounted to the front rack and bungy my gas auger to the gun racks. That way I can put the ATV in my pick-up bed and everything fits. I drive on the ice the same way and when I get where I'm going the flipover comes off...and everything is dry  ;D

I built a rack that goes in the receiver of my four wheeler. It sits about 5" below the rack so the shack i don't have to lift it as high to put it on there. Two ratchet straps and I'm good to go. I drive four wheeler about a 1/4 mile down the road to access to the lake I fish so it saves me from having to trailer the four wheeler. Also nice to have a little suspension under the shack. It enables me to go a lot faster on the ice. I wouldn't think of going half as fast if I was pulling the shack behind. With the right snow and ice conditions I've run across the ice at 55 mph. If I can find a picture of it and figure out how to post I'll do so.

If you have to stop that quick, you are probably going too fast...

I don't know how far you guys go on ice but we can get out 10 miles or so.. it's not a race...

This is what I was thinking, seems a nice set of long mud flaps could be an easy solution

These are from my original rack. I updated it to aluminum when I bought a new wheeler. Cant seem to find those pics though. I screwed a sled that matched the one on my shack to the rack. This held it in place real nice.
