River fishing

Does anyone try ice fishing on any of the rivers here with luck? I was just wondering how many people actually do.

Be aware, moving water can often create very dangerous/thin ice.

Fished main stem of the Flathead River a couple times this winter. Normally only get 2"/3" for a few days before it breaks up. This winter we've had 4" to 6" for a month or better.

I don't Ice fish rivers.  The current thins the ice.  Plus, if you go in, you could get sucked downstream.

I have seen people fishing thru the ice on the Missouri when it's 20 below for a spell, they were on back eddies, but I would never try it.

Delaware River here in PA gets ice fished, as others are saying most stick to backwater and coves. Be VERY CAREFUL, there can be a lot of undercurrent in some areas.

You guts crack me up, glad I joined here. The guy I talked to has a relative with property at the end of 4th St in Vaughn on the river, said "go ahead, just tell them I sent you!" Makes me almost as nervous as river fishing on ice in it's self..

I've done it on the Yellowstone with some success for Cats on a backwater/ very little current area.  I've also explored the main stem with no success.  But when scouting any areas on the river I was in my rockclimbing harness and firmly secured to shore with a buddy on belay. Then checking every step with a heavy spud bar and drilling holes every so many feet to watch the thickness.   The thought of being swept under the ice by current is scary as hell.  With that said, I've also heard of some guys doing well for walleyes on the river, they wouldn't give up their spot but I believe it was a back channel/slough as well.

I've seen guys in their wheelhouses set up on the main channel of the Yellowstone between Fairview,MT and Cartwright,ND

All depends on the ice thickness. Was out again on the Flathead this weekend, main channel was starting to open, we had 11" under the flip over.

Tried to post pics earlier today, of the Bull Trout we were catching, but the pictures are way to big.
