Son's visit
« on: Jan 19, 2017, 05:09 PM »
My older son who lives in CO came by for a short but over do visit... We got out Tuesday to a local pond for some pan fish. The pressure was on with a bunch of family coming for a fish fry that night (I think they also wanted to see Craig)! The target was yellow perch and we found enough for a meal for 10 plus some left over. We had to work at it, with a total (I counted) of 198 holes cut (it is so easy with a Rigid)... We also landed a few Crappy and my son "laid" them out for a pic;

Most productive was a Silver Swedish Pimple with Chartreuse a mousy. 8 feet of water was the best depth.
Dropped him off at Logan today and hope it is not so long to see him again.

The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad.

It was great that you got out with him. It's always sad to see them go.
How much ice did you have?

Nice story, great pics and good eating ...a noteworthy experience!

Tell us about the crappie and perch bite, choice of jigs/baits and jigging strategy.

I have read in previous messages that you are a big fan of jigging with Chubby's... but noticed one rod was rigged with what looked like a Northland forage minnow...

Much appreciate your thoughts on jig baits and techniques ...

6" of ice with a little bit broken up at the edges but doable... Most of the fish were caught on a Silver Swedish Pimple with Chartreuse and a mousy. I did start out using a Chubby Darter, but got more hook ups on the Pimple (the Darter was great for calling them in). In the end it was all about hole hopping, not even using the sounder, just going from hole to hole dropping the jig for about 2-3 minutes and hooking up or moving to the next hole...  Never stopped, either cutting holes or jigging... A cracker or two walking between holes and a swig from one of the Sobes that I drink. This was not a "hanging" out waiting for a bite type day. I out fished my son (he a fly fishing guide in CO, so it is good to show him the old man still has it) and one of the main reasons was he spent too much time fishing each hole... As I have talked about in my ice fishing seminars and taught him, how often do you keep casting to the same spot in open water (with no result)? Each hole is a "new" cast, covering water that may have fish. Until (or unless) you find your "HOT" hole you have to keep casting... That does not mean you can't go back and fish old holes, just make your "cast" and move on... He also kept fishing smaller jigs (tungsten) and was not doing as well, but I am sure that was because the fish did not see the smaller jigs from a distance and did not "come calling". Getting them to bite was not the problem, it was all about hunting them down... Hope that help for info on the jigging, that day... Other days it is different.

Thanks for all the kind words about time spent with my son. We do the best we can raising them and it is great when they turn out to be someone you can be proud of and want to spend time with...
