Good electric fillet knife
« on: Jan 18, 2017, 05:02 PM »
After years of using a manual knife on piles of pannies, I got my first electric fillet knife for Christmas this year.  I got the berkley deluxe electric knife and put it to work the other day on a mess of perch.  I was so surprised at how badly it worked.  Blades were hard to lock into place and it was horribly underpowered, overheating and bogging down on 10-12" (not frozen) perch.  I can't believe berkley put thier good name on such an inferior product.

So, I want to get a good one...let's hear what you guys have used and what is good/bad about other brands?

I tried a berkley and took it back, then a rapala 12v with the 120 converter, that sucked so i took it back.  I ended up reading reviews on the rapala heavy duty fillet knife.  I have cleaned thousands of fish with it and its the one for me.  Super powerful, fast, and agile enough for the smallest panfish or biggest walleyes.
I fish a lot....I catch a little.

Some will say just a regular electric carving knife from Walmart will work just fine. I say you get what you pay for which is why I buy American Angler electric fillet knife. The blades are sharper than thkse other brands and they have a few different sizes for your liking. When you clean big fish 16+ inch fish you want a knife that will power through those bones with little effort. I have the same electric knife now for 8 years which I love but I wish American angler would make a cordless version. You think if I emailed then twice a week for a year do you think they would get the picture.

They are spendy but you can rest assure it will last you many years of use. I bought the shorter blades so I can debone my fish now.

For the last 8 years or so I have used the American Angler also.

My wife bought me the Rapala electric 2 years ago for my birthday. I used it twice and went back to the AA. To me the AA is faster and sharper than the $80 lithium ion. I wish I had brought it back.

I have used a lot of different electric knives and they all work.  The trick is to feather the trigger as when you go full blast you will not get good clean cuts and most of the time cut the fish in half.  I got a yellow and green Mr. Twister and its work just fine.

I have read hundreds of threads on electric knives and the majority actually give Mister Twister the nod over the AA. They are even cheaper.

X2...........although I prefer to use a standard fillet knife, if there is a lot of fish to clean, out comes the Mister Twister.

don't get me wrong the first electric I owned was a Mr Twister because at the time that is what everyone sold, but the american angler is a much better knife. AA  is designed to fit the hand unlike the twister square body design. The AA  blades come to a point which is crucial if you want pull out the bones. The mr twister blades when they inserted into the slots have more play then the AA rigid design. You can buy generic electrics knifes that are identical to the mr twister for about 20 that the MR twister blades can be used.

I would take a mister twister over a rapala, but the American angler with saltwater blades runs circles around both. I filleted out 60 jumbo perch from our group this last outing without a problem. The Rpms that it runs at in combination with the saltwater blades run through them like butter

I think we should all email AA twice a week to tell them they need to make a cordless version.

My $20 MR twister is just fine. I like it better then my Storm (Rapala) knife. I'm sure an AA electric is nice. If I cleaned fish every day or 2-3 times a week I would maybe jump up and pay the price. I clean fish about 2-3 times a month, unless the bite is on. Then I might clean fish every day for a week lol.My Mr. twister & storm electrics just wont die. over 13 yrs on the storm. I found it takes rapala blades, and is the same design.

Had a Mister Twister years ago and really liked it. I'm in the market for a new fillet knife and I might take a look at those AA knives just to see  how it compares to the Mr. Twister.

The blades are on the expensive side but last a long time.

I have had the Rapala 12V/120V for 7-8 years and it always gets hot and the blades don't reciprocate very fast.  Actually bought a Mister Twister from BPS 3 weeks ago and really like it (only have done 50 or so crappie with it so far).  I even modified my Rapala 12" blades to lock into the Mister Twister unit.  I went with the twister because it was pretty inexpensive and has gotten solid reviews on this site for years.

Mister Twisters have been my choice forever. If you want a better one Twister makes a Piranha that has stronger gears for saltwater fish.

Im still using the American Angler I bought 25 years ago and aside from the blades being a little dull it still works really well and is my go to for cleaning a big mess of fish.
I fish therfore I am
