The bite is best in March. Check the regs...long trip for 25 perch where only 5 can be over 12".
Its on my bucket list but for a 5 fish stringer mount.

How big are they really? With the arms stretched out as far as can go my guess maybe 10"s. I got more and better 15min's from the house. Put the same long drive trip time into catching quality perch close to home. I'll even give a name of a good public lake to start your efforts. Mud Lake. I know there's more to a trip than just fishing. To each their own.

Those arms are out there quite a ways lol.  Those perch have 7 bars, it is my experience 7 bar perch are 10 to 12 inchs long.  But on a trip the memories are what make the trip the fish are a bonus.

(Image removed from quote.)

Correct...there is no questioning the quality of fish from Gogebic.  A simple search of the net will show you what it is capable of.  Those in the pic with arms stretched are nice fish but gobebic is known for perch over 2lbs and over 14 inches.

Devils was phenominal 8-10 years ago but no limit hit it hard.
Simcoe has more perch than any body of water I've ever been on but you have to do some serious sorting.

My money is on the SD sloughs and western reservoirs right now. WY, ID, MTand CO.
Northern IN has equal size but not nearly as many numbers but a 14 incher is a 14 incher regardless of location.

There is a reason they call these perch teeter pigs!  Was up here around Christmas caught a few nice eater walleye and a few 9"-10" perch. Nice area...

South Mud next to Nyona lake. Just off 31 north of Peru and yes I have got a good snipe area. You should stay in Indy, it's a long drive from your computer.

My father in law went on a spring trip to Gogebic several years ago. He was not impressed. Said many catches of small walleye and the perch would be there with the walleye, but no huge ones, just a lot of 10"-11"

Road trips are great for just getting away but if your after trophy fish don't get your expectations to high. Hugh lake and if you don't know someone or hire a guide it's a stab in the dark. Five fish limit with only two over 12 inches, take some food cause you won't get enough to eat on a good day. As jigmup said Indiana has just as big of perch and you can keep a whole lot more as a bonus. Takes work just like it would up there.

Fishing mud flats for perch is certainly not a stab in the dark.

I see the point but you can eliminate large portions of the flat from the game plan.

I usually sit between a deep mud flat and a gradual  slope to a mid Lake hump flat.   Then set Tipp ups on the sharp side of the area for eyes or pike.   Athe dusk and Dawn I Will  be jigging rapps  and vibratos  untill it's time to perch jerk:)

I've fished there for many years if you leave from the boat launch in bergland head toward the middle and a little to the right about 3/4 mile out .
