From my experience on a so called normal year here in north central part of the state we would get this type of thaw around the middle of February and we would be done by the end of February. Yes I expect to do a little more on the ice. Keep in mind that in a normal year we would see a melt that would work on 12 or more inches of ice so this is alittle different, we never have had a real good base. That sun position in Feb can do a number on the shore even with sub freezing air temps.

I'm just worried about the ice that's left after the short thaw and how that will be when we get new ice to crystallize with it.  This is a serious year for spuding.

I'm a little farther south than bigr, but I agree it's going to be doubtful we get much fishable ice this winter. Not impossible of course...just maybe a 30/70 chance with the 30% on good ice..lol.  The  water temps are gonna start going up around here this weekend.

I think we will be on by Feb 1 in NW Indiana and I wonder if we will fish into March. There is still a very good chance winter and cold could hit us hard and lock us down for a long time.

Shine your boats up boys and girls. It's boating season lighting and thunder last two days. Am headed south next Friday to Lake of Egypt, boat got worked on yesterday had it out in driveway in that 65 degee weather.lol We may get back on something but it won't be much ,short lived at best on small water. It's over for me back to the boat. We need it to STOP RAINING so things clear up to be able to fish around my area. I cant wait to get out next weekend!!

From what I heard the lakes here are ice free right now.  Doesn't look to make hardly any ice until maybe next weekend.  Then it is Feb.  Typical year we get ice though mid March, so we could get back on, but those years we have ice built up by now.  January is our cold month, so it isn't looking good.  Break out the waders.

I hope you guys get some yet in Feb but it doesn't look good for the next ten days.  For me it's over from the ice fall I took near Christmas.  The Dr. got both tendons attached to the bone last Mon. so I'm out till spring.  Not the way I wanted to end the season.  On the bright side I took my buddy with me last Sun. to a pond with your long poles and had a ball with 8-9" gills in 3' of water.
