Temps drop down to 30's and teens at night starting on the 22nd and lasting 5-7 days straight. Alot of winter left, seems like everyone has already threw on the towel a wee bit early if you ask me. Don't worry there will be plenty of fishing to go

I'm heading up to Moosehead in a few weeks.  Hoping to get out at least once before then to shake out my gear and make sure everything's still in working order though...

You could be on ice in NW ct today I'd bet, and nice freshly refrozen ice by tomorrow or Sunday.

Had a friend check Stillwater this morning, edges are rough but 5 feet from shore 7" and in the middle 8".  Bringing a plank tomorrow and giving it a go.

Imagine having local lakes you'd love to spend more time on getting unbelievable fishing pressure compared to years past...now imagine those same lakes being the only safe ones in CT....so it really depends on your perspective...

The long range forecasts I've seen predict normal or below average temps in late January-early February. With luck we get a good February and maybe some March.

Observations and complaints are different things sir.  I landed 20 lakers this weekend...I definitely have no complaints!  How was your fishing?

Wow! In Ct? Ours was good.  Thin ice kept us off the best spot on the body we were on, but plenty of flags!  Jigging was slow.

NY...it would be great if CT had them...best part about living in Colebrook is I can get to big water relatively quickly.

I'm still hoping for an arctic blast like we had 2 years ago.  I think I remember open water for a few days in Jan. then ice right through the end of March.

Yes, the warm weather stinks. But let's put it in perspective. Last year was horrible all things considered, yet I still managed to get out at least 10 times. That involved a little driving, but usually not more than an hour each way. This winter has been a roller coaster until now, but just think:  we could live in Florida and then we'd have no ice at all. A lot of the Rhode Island guys seem to have the mentality that they are at the mercy of fate, and just have to wait around and hope for ice. A little drive and most of us could be on 6 inches. I fished the North Shore of Boston yesterday on 5 inches of black ice and there wasn't a soul around...

More than likely we are done for. In two weeks it looks like a cold front might move in but the majority of water here will not freeze over this year like 15-16. Most places thaw in mid march so possibly 4 weeks from mid feb to match. But like in other posts we will all have to put miles in to find ice.

When was the last time things froze by dec?

Hopefully we'll get some really cold weather in February.

Looks like even la niña (she was supposed to give us a colder than "normal" winter) is no match for climate change.

Here’s the thing. If it suddenly turns cold in February that could provide some  fishable ice. But the days will be getting longer and the angle of the sun higher. This will make the edges more and more of a challenge as the month moves on.

As the earth continues its warming trend all winter sports, like ours, are taking a hit. That’s just the way it is. We didn’t take (and some still don’t) this warming seriously. So now it’s “pay up” time.  :o

No it wasn't.   It was a very weak la nina followed by a strong but much weaker than expected el nino.   The La Nina was not expected to effect our winter at all and in fact we are in ENSO Neutral conditions.  In the last 30 years, the average date for Lake George to freeze completely is February 6.   We are still on track for that.   Keep calm and carry a spud bar!

Do you have a link to support all of those meterological facts?
