New Tip Ups
« on: Jan 12, 2017, 01:24 PM »
I was getting ready for a trip this weekend and noticed that my 20 year old 40 Up tip ups are in pretty rough shape.  I guess it is time to invest in new.  Can't decide between Jack Traps and Heritage.  Thoughts???

I'm just here to read what all the experts have to say.

Jack's hands down, I have both. The jack's reels are so much smoother than the heritage. Also you will pay almost $30 for a heritage that are often unfinished. Also the reels on the heritage are just pressed into the wood, they do not go all the way through and over time the reel will fall off unless you run a bolt thru and secure.I only use my Heritage for Pike and Cusk. Just my opinion.

I'm serious.

Then don't buy anything Jay, just had these dropped off to see if I could find someone to use.  They are rough shape, probably 50 years old, and need some work.  Reminds me a lot of you actually and are certainly good enough for your ability level, let me know when you will be buy to pick them up.  Oh yeah, almost forgot, complete with pillow case holder for when you need to take your afternoon snooze!

I finally bit the bullet and bought a set of Jack's this year.  I'll give my Heritage traps to my son.  I've used Heritage for 20 years or so and the traps have held up fine.  I just got tired of having to tune them up every year and screwing around with the spring on the flags.  They get twisted and bent over time.

We'll see if the Jack's are worth the money.  It was nice heading into the shop and customizing the reels and flags.

i think jack traps are nice and quality, but there are other options that will last you just as long that you can get cheaper and they work just as well..

I've used heritages for 25yrs for brookies to togue with no issues. had a set of 40ups since i was a kid. no issues. jacks in my opinion are way over priced but will last forever.hard to set them when its real cold. heritages can be set and reeled with gloves on if need be. my 2 cents.

I would say Heritage or Allagash. My Heritage are 25+ years old.

I have Thompson, Mooseheads, Allagash, Maine Trap, Jacks & Heritage

I did read on here the Jack's Burn very well, if you need more Firewood. ;D ;D

I've fished heritages sinced I started ice fishing. Almost 30 years. Still have some of the first traps I ever bought and with some minor parts replacements on SOME of them (a few still 100% original) they still work fine/great and I still use them. Over the years I have 'test-driven' many other brands. Pretty much every year I'll buy one Trap from another maker and/or another design. I honestly can't think of many/any I haven't. BUT last year I finally bought a Jack. I don't know why it took me so long to grab one. Likely price. And KTP was having a sale. After using it for one day I immediately returned and bought 3 more. Now, I'm kind of retiring my old-faithful heritages and sitting on them as 'back-up' or spare gear for big group fishing. I want my primary set to be all Jacks. The search for perfection ended. Jacks.

Have run heritage for the last 20 years. On my second set. First one lasted me 10 years before the reels started to pop off and the flags were weak. Been considering jacks but also don't like the 69$ tag on them. Yes they are quality. Yes they are pretty. But I have a saw and a drill... hhhmmmm

If you have the time, run into Loring Bait and Supply in Milford.  The owner Justin is great to deal with, and he sells hydro dipped heritage traps.  Price for 5 is really good!

I'll vote for heritage. Replacement parts are readily available at most bait shops. PITA to set the jacks with the trip hook through the split ring inside of a bracket and then the spring steel flag just kind of floats around like a wet noodle when tripped. So often in life we are faced with tough decisions.
It must be something in the water.

Jacks all the way.  If you whine about not being able to set your flag with gloves on you need to turn in your man card. ;D

You have to ask yourself, "self, do I want to catch jack or do I want to catch lakers!" I'm a heritage fan all around better trap more user friendly and the line winds on the proper way!

Let me recommend trying a set of Polar traps, with the T release at the top.

I've used mine a dozen times a season now for 20 years with no problems or maintenance. The only drawback I've found is the sort flag is not as visible from a distance or it there is deep snow on the ice.

Get the Jack's by far the best ice fishing trap ever made .  Go to Monmouth  and you can set up your own traps , line color ,flag color .
