huge bass today (video updated!)
« on: Jan 11, 2017, 08:15 PM »
had a monster grab my gill jig today.  we were having a good day with a mixed bag of bass crappie gills and perch. caught a sack full for a couple dinners.  the fun came when this fat girl grabbed my gill jig.  gave me a 5 min battle on 2pound test and a schooley reel. buddy got most of it on video too.  she wrapped up 2 other lines in the fight too!  i didnt think i would bring her to hand on that 14hook, but she came.  biggest bass i have caught since the 7.4# from a few years ago.

this female full of eggs measured 24" long and almost18" around. she is my biggest bass through the ice, that i can recall. im guessing 8-9 pounds.

fish with the rod

have to edit out some background in the video yet.

24 inches and nearly 18 inches in girth is at least 7 lbs.

I do love bass through the ice on light gill set ups! Always a riot.
NICE fish.

There are several calculators online and a few charts too for close estimations of weight when length and girth are known.  8.64lbs by this one.

Having caught a few in this range, I'd agree that your estimate is really close.

Glad to hear you released her. And who gives a crap if people see the background or what lake it was caught in. Catching one fish sure ain't gonna make me go wherever it was caught, I just wanna watch the fight

Landing that beheemoth on that tackle says a lot about the angler.
Forget about location or what lure was used. Most would never have gotten a look at it.
Never tell a fish where its supposed to be
