Ice fishing & Fur Hats ..
« on: Jan 10, 2017, 09:39 PM »
My go to ice fishing Tuk is a Beaver/Otter fur hat..Russian Style...my son has a Coon /Fisher combo Russian style.....warm as toast...has to be 20 or colder to wear them. It's even better we trapped the animals ,skinned them and sent them out for tanning...and had USAFOXX make the hats. Quite a journey...but worth it. Anyone else rocking the fur ??

Just Mad Bomber real rabbit fur, one canvas and one deer skin.  I worn that canvas one for about 15 years before it simply fell apart from rot.  Damn I miss that hat.  That was my favorite.

Rabbit fur here, buddy had one made out of arctic fox.  It came with a warning about wearing it in
low light conditions where large owls were present.   Legend, real or not, has it that guys have been
attacked by great horned owls at dusk.  They are warm.

I've got one from Russia. Heck if i know what kind of fur it is. All I do know is that it's black and warm as all get out!

I bought my wife a quivut hat.  Quivut is muskox wool and is considered  the finest and warmest cashmere in the world.  She can wear that hat at 40 below with out a chill.  I would really like a seal skin hat but I think I'll wait till I shoot my own muskox and have my own hat made.
I was born an Alaskan I just didn't live here at the time.

I've just gotten into furbearer trapping, and one of those hats is first on the list when I get a couple large coons.  My wife wants a scarf, so told her she would have to wait till I get some martens or something with short fur.

Mittens are on the high priority list as well, for both of us.  Me for ice fishing, her for everyday use.  She's ALWAYS cold.

How did ya like the USAF&F quality, turn around time, etc....?  We are looking at using them as well.
The next time you think you know it all, try telling someone else's dog what to do.

I have a rabbit fur mad bomber.  Plenty warm enough for me.  I would love a skunk hat like Curly had on the 3 Stooges.

Also Beaver, locally trapped by a good friend, also made at Foxx furs. I can only wear it when it's zero or below. Too hot otherwise. Easily the warmest hat I've ever owned by a long shot. I'd put a pic in, but can't seem to figure it out.

I have a rabbit fur hat, super warm.  On a side note there was a post on here a while ago where the guy asked about buying a fur hat and people posted some places but I'm not sure what section it was in.  If I find it I'll post it for anyone who might want to buy one.

Had a rabbit fur hat and left it in the shanty at the end of last season
Looks like the squirrels liked it it more than I did. They stole every bit of fur
out of the hat. At least they left the shanty alone. Rabbit fur fed squirrels taste
pretty dang good!

My wife and I picked up some qivuit gear when we were in AK for our honeymoon.  I got a hat and she got an earwarmer/headband thing.  Unbelievable how warm that stuff is, especially for how moderately thin/light the knit is.

Was there a price break for providing your own fur?  They are spendy for sure but if I could justify it by getting my own fur then there's some awesome heirloom in the waiting.

The Mad Bomber is the Bomb!!!   Gets too warm some days in Iowa.  Couldn't imagine wearing some of the other fur hats mentioned. My brain would boil.

How do you guys clean the fur part of your hats? I've had a Mad Bomber for a couple years and there is quite a bit of sweat built up in the fur. I tried gently scrubbing it with a brush and water but it didn't seem to help very much.
