Ice Question?
« on: Jan 07, 2017, 12:25 PM »
A buddy of mine just came to see me at work and said that the pond ice was no good. I asked why. He said it was popping like crazy and loud. Is that the ice getting expanding or is it turning rotten?

This time of year it is making ice or expanding, so it's a good thing.

Was out today the lake was popping and groaning good stuff! I remember the first time I took my nephew out the lake was really talking. I looked behind to see how he would react, he was on his way back to the shore!

Keep it safe! JDL

I was out with my 7 year old son on Saturday and we were on some good fish and having a great time and the ice was super-noisy and he was, despite all my assurances, still quite nervous every time there was loud noise.  It's probably something that's just hard-wired into our brains!

He didn't get up and run out of the shelter, though.  Too busy catching fish!

It is even funnier when you find out the kid was 27 years old at the time!!

Rodeo...  I have been ice fishing most of my life, but way more in the second 20 years.  That is a sound I will never get used to, or entirely comfortable with.  Especially when you feel the rumble and it all but briefly sloshes the water up through your ice hole!!!  No matter how many times it happens and nothing has ever gone wrong, or how many people reassure you that this is a healthy noise, it usually dictates when my time on the ice has drawn to a close for the day!!!  In my experience it happens most often just after dark when I assume that the ice grows due to cooler temps prevailing.  Much like the street lights indicating my return home as a child, the cracking and popping of the ice after dark is my cue to wrap it up!!!  Fear will keep you alive!!!

The sound of the ice popping and booming is one of my most favorite sounds on earth!

Along with the sound of a Jiffy ice auger cutting ice. . . .

And the crunching of creepers on the ice. . . .

Some nights when I close my eyes, those sounds are still in my head. . . .

And I grin, it was a very good day!

swap that jiffy sound for the quiet of an ion and a screamin drag aand then its perfect!!
