22" catch cover hole sleeve - need ideas
« on: Jan 06, 2017, 10:15 PM »
My shack is built on a pop-up camper frame.  I have 22" from the "ground" to the top of my catch hole covers.  I see catch cover sells an 18" for $35... can't see spending that much (need two) and still have them 4" short.

I've thought about using a 5 gal bucket with bottom cut out and then extend the bucket with plastic from a "roll up sled".

I've also thought about aluminum flashing.

Any ideas?

6 gallon buckets should work. I made some for a similar set up a few years ago. Put some insulation on the outside to make it fit nice and tight.

You can also use two buckets and have them slide one inside the other to get any length you need with a nice tight fit.

Use plastic culvert or large plastic pipe.

I also have a converted pop up to sleeper shanty, with a similar distance to ice. I used a large pvc pipe with a 9" inside diameter. I didn't have a fancy shop or the tools for the job but a chainsaw sufficed. I left mine up about an inch and a half and cut two finger holes to pull them up. I'm sure they could have been engineered to sit flush with the floor and still pulled out easy enough but it was quick and I think it may keep a guy from stepping in a hole.

THanks for the ideas guys...some things I hadn't thought of... the mind is rolling again.  Fished today but it was pretty cold / windy.  We used tip-ups and tip-downs and had 4 hits but didn't ice any fish.  Would have been nice to have the inside holes sleeved for some jiggin' today.  Again, thanks for the ideas.

the 18" sleeve should be fine. once you drill a whole, use a little slush to fill in around it. will actually fit nice and snug.

I use Reflectix insulation for my hole sleeve.  24" wide role and trim to fit.  It is super light weight and it folds flat when not in use.

I converted a popup camper and used 10" PVC for hole sleeves. When I drilled I left an ice cone to seal the bottoms and sealed the tops using the foam sealers for window air conditioners cut to fit around the top and glued end to end. Camper jacks under the corners of the shack help to keep the seals from moving up the pipes due to floor movement. If the pipes aren't sealed top and bottom, wind will blow in around the pipes. I cut my PVC a few inches taller than required in order to use the foam seals and to prevent dropped items from going down the pipes. It also was nice to be able to give the top of the pipes a boot to break them loose.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

Now thats a great idea!
I kinda like that better than the sleeves I just bought, for 70 bucks plus shipping...

Thanks NHGunowner - Reflectix looks like a winner.  Hope to big some up tomorrow.  May use it in conjunction with a 5 gallon bucket with bottom cut out.

There was a suggestion about a toboggan... (roll up variety)... I thought of that but could only find them 18" wide.
