Jaw Jacker - Automatic hook set
« on: Jan 05, 2017, 04:11 PM »
I was curious if any one has had experience or owns any of the automatic hook setter devices such as the Jaw Jacker.  Also are they legal in South Dakota, I was told by someone that they werent allowed in Minnesota.  Any info would be great.

I have one and have been catching perch with it. I think I'll be getting another one or two in the near future.

Jaw Jackers are definitely a good tool to have in your ice fishing arsenal. The fun begins when you hear the rod spring up and you see it bobbing up and down as you run across the ice, you know there is a fish on.  They work well!

I finally decided to pull the trigger and get a jaw jacker this year.  I've had it for a couple of weeks and haven't had a chance to use it yet.  I hopefully it works as good as the videos and the testimonials I've heard.  I agree, $30 is a little much, but all it takes is one lunker and it's worth every penny.  Plus, I figured in the grand scheme of what I have spent on fishing, what the hell is 30 more?

After reading this thread the other day I watched a DIY video on making a jaw jacker. I looked around the garage, found 3/4"x6"x20" boards, eyelet screws, some wire, 3/4" pvc and within an hour I made 8 jaw jackers. My son and I tried them today on perch, I will never use a tipup again, Thanks! for discussing this topic fellas they work great!

Go to equipment, click on inventions and go to page 8, I made some like this design and couldn't be happier. I found that I had to play around with the location of where to place the hook the the eye of rod hooks on pending on length and etc. I have several holes in that location so I can move it up or down quickly. Keep going thru the pages I believe there are more to look at.

.  At the home page scroll down to "ice fishing tips". Scroll down in that section to "equipment ", then scroll down to inventions. Hope this will help you. I at one time knew how to post pics but haven't in a long time and forgot how to or I would.

I hope this can help everyone...

I just made 2 of these using this guy's measurements and video help. Very easy to do and appears like it will work great. I haven't been out on the ice yet to test it but "tested" it and tweaked the trigger mechanism several times in the house.

Thanks for this thread. I was thinking these looked kinda cool but kinda steep. I just made my first prototype using a barrage of ideas and so far I am super pumped! I think I got like $3 into the first and am prolly gonna make enough for me and all my friends!

Here are 2 finished products (using the youtube link I posted above for direction). I also "measured" out a ruler system on top for any fish that need measured. I also put some velcro on the trigger mechanism and the tube to hold it down during transport.

Thanks,

I wasn't able to get pics to post on here. If anyone wants to they can go to https://www.flickr.com/photos/146789418@N03 to see the jawjackers I made. Like I wrote before I made 8 of them in an hour they were so simple to make. We used them the other day on 32 crappie and 18 perch without a single problem. I was worried the hook set would tear the crappies mouths but I saw no sign of that. Hope this helps some of you and tight lines.

I don't really know how to run this website, especially when it comes to posting pictures. The post above is the design I came up with, less than $4 in each and can build them in about 5 mins....
I tried them this evening, they work!!!
