Thankfully I don't base my decisions on this nonsense. We'll be on two Saturdays from now. We already were on in December and caught 32 jumbo perch.

Ice fishing no matter how short, is not a flop in my opinion, cause it cant be done everywhere

I don't listen to the negativity either.....there will be ice somewhere, even if it takes a bit longer to drive there....

Predict ice this weekend. Very cold the next 3 days & the water is already super cooled.

Natedog,

You should be able to get on Pawn Run on Sunday. We did real well there a few weeks ago. If you can't get on Sunday, next weekend for sure. It's nice to see some of the fishdeepcreek heads on here!

Hopefully it locks back up.  Was down this past Saturday  to check ice and the 4 and 5 inches we fished the week before was GONE!.  Nothing in Sky Valley, Harvey's, or Turkey Neck coves.  Just a skim from the night before and I'm sure it was gone with the rain on Sunday/Monday.  Winds not helping matters at the moment.
Bring on the ice!!!!!!!  <br />

With the freezing temperatures forecasted from now through Monday (https://www.wunderground.com/us/md/swanton/) there is a chance for a nice sheet of ice to form. I read a recent post by Gord Pyzer that explains how ice thickness builds relative to air temperature after skim ice begins to form (http://www.outdoorcanada.ca/How_Fast_Does_Your_Lake_Make_Ice). Assuming ideal conditions (moderate wind, no snow cover, & clear skies) the math adds up to over 80 Freezing Degree Days (> 5" of ice). When I plotted the average temp over the next 5 days (15 F) it suggested about 5-6" of ice as well. That's a great start to the ice sheet, one thing that I don't know is how the subsequent period of 5 days of 30-40F temps will weaken the ice. Hopefully, we will be in for another cold front after Saturday, 14 Jan (right now it's beyond the extended forecast), I already have a trip booked for 18-20 Jan! I'm looking forward to reading reports from anybody that gets out sooner, I'd love to compare the observed ice thickness to the predicted value.

I don't know about DCL, I'm looking at Weather Channel now. Up to 46 on Thursday and Friday with rain? That'll decimate the ice and no good freezes after that for the foreseeable future. I think that most of the lake will skim up tonight and the southern coves will be fishable by Sunday, but by Thursday, everything will be dangerous. I don't see things improving by the 18th either. Unless February has some surprises, this could be another bust year.

Even If I only get a chance to get my hooks wet once this year.  I'm a happy camper. Nothing better than ice fishing.
I moved down to MD from New England this summer and have been wondering when the safe ice with arrive.   Hopefully soon.

On a side note,  how do I start a new topic?  I can't seem to find that button.

Agree with Raptor 22. I expect 4+" solid ice in sheltered southern coves this weekend. Next week not so good.

Been out ice fishing 3 times already this season.

Heading out from DC area on Sunday and staying overnight and half Monday. Wish me luck and let's hope some ice builds up. Season is so short, you gotta take chances.  :icefish:

Which coves typically freeze up first? I've never been on early ice at DCL and wanted to make sure i plan for parking. Thank you

Deep Creek is fishable.  I took a day trip there yesterday and angered a few test holes.  I did plan on fishing only planned on drilling holes.  There was about 2.5inches.  I figure that by tomorrow mid morning there will be 3-3.5 inches in some places.

I know I'm heading out tomorrow morning.  I plan on arriving on the water around 5am.  get traps in the water by 5:30ish.... land my first fish on the season by 5:31ish...

ONE BIG Question I have:  Can you use live bait at Deep Creek?  I've seen mixed messages on a few different websites.

Thanks for the ice report!

Live bait is legal on Deep Creek. Don't quote me, but I believe there is a limit on the amount of minnows you can catch yourself (30 or so?). You'll want to keep your bait receipt to prove that your minnows are store bought.

I'm going up tomorrow morning too. What part of the lake did you check? Certain coves seem to build ice much faster than others. 2.5" in one cove may be 4" in another.

I'll be up tomorrow...Plan on being at nicklows at 7am for bait...If anyone wants to be safe n buddy up meet me there, or look for the Eskimo evo 1 shelter. If anyone else is going alone n wants to meet later just pm me..I get decent service around the lake n should b able to respond. I hate going on thin ice alone. I'll also have an extra flasher.... Be safe guys

Fished back cove at state park, 3 inches of ice, didn't go to main lake or past state park bridge but it looks like 2-3 inches of ice there and more to come overnight. Spent 2 hours on the ice with zero bites. I'll be at the Cherry Creek cove or at state park in the morning. Respond back to this thread if you know better places to fish and plan on being there on Monday, always nice to team up. Good luck

Cherry creek can be very dangerous early ice.  Be very careful.  Ice there can vary in thickness, so always be checking with your spud.

Any updates on parking for GG access? I only come up once or twice a season, willing to pay to park.

Hope to make a few trips this year, looks like I will have to wait a little longer on the weather. Always catch fish well worth the trip for me and my kids. Finding a place to park is always a pain. Oh well good luck to everyone and be safe
