As much as I love to fish, and ice fish, I've never fished Lake St. Helen. (Have a place near Mcmaster's on tha Au Sable)
How's the take? Bluegill? Perch? Walleye?

I remember  20-25 years  ago  you  could  just   crush  the crappies in there.

Lake St. Helen can be challenging but the fish are their.  The problem is you need to use different tactics than in the past.

fished last Thursday between lake 2 and 3
best i have done on that lake yet.
i fish it alot early ice for walleye and crappie but it is usually slow.
most of the walleye i catch are worth  waiting for though, and the stained water makes the st helen walleye darker than most of the ones out of houghton lake
st helen is great when you want to avoid the crowds but i always catch more fish in houghton
edge of the weeds 8-11ft of water is usually were i start

Hey King i'm coming up there this weekend. Anyway I can get some direction on catching some walleye? Lakes going to be swamped with people looking for pan fish so I was thinking there could be some open spots for walleye. Ive tried many lakes to get them through the ice but have been pretty unsuccessful. If you're a fan of beer or Fireball I can offer them up for some insight.
