Does the K Drill float?
« on: Dec 27, 2016, 11:45 AM »
I'm going to be picking up an 8 inch K Drill for this season, and am kind of worried how it doesn't have a round plate to protect it from going down the hole like the nils does.  Has anyone ever dropped theirs or tested to see if the float is actually enough to keep it from getting under the ice?

That is what that round thing on top of the drill does

Yes I know, but has anyone tested it and dropped it down the hole to see if the float holds it?

If it doesn't, I'd suspect their R&D department is going to have a feild day. I don't think they'd release the product if it didn't float like it should.

If you try it use a rope lol

Used it for the first time this weekend, it rips through ice.  Cut 27 holes through 5-6 inches of ice and only lost one light on my battery.  If I work up the courage this weekend Ill give it a try and chuck it down the hole haha.

I don't know if it'll stay up, but it will give you time to catch it before it sinks.

I still haven't worked up the nerve to drop it down a hole yet, but after a couple hundred holes it hasn't come off yet.  Maybe this summer ill throw it in some shallow water to try it out.

Not sure what's wrong with you... ???

You can tell if something floats without letting go of it..

Just drill a hole and see if it floats by holding on to it!

Many things wrong with me <°)))>{<°)))>{

I know it floats if you hold it, I did that (also pointed out by justduwe), my concern is if the velocity it has when it is falling and spinning is enough to pop it under the ice before it bobs back up.

My thoughts exactly.  Better hope to have a buddy around with another auger to help locate it under the ice if it does come loose.

It's too light, the water in the hole should stop any momentum..

Tip I saw on another forum. Get a Frisbee. drill a hole in the center of it. Attach the Frisbee on the auger between the top of the float and the bottom of the black washer on the drill adaptor. No way the auger can go down the hole after that. Just make sure the Frisbee you get is a larger diameter than the auger.
