Spearing in Wisconsin
« on: Dec 13, 2016, 10:17 AM »
Can someone give me a readers digest of the Spearing laws for Northerns here in Wisconsin? I read the regulations book but it seems to only talk about rough fish. Are there only certain lakes? Is it only the northern part of the state? The regulations said nothing bigger thatn a 12" hole except on Superior?

I would love to try spearing, but I want to plan a little before jumping in head first.

Thanks

As far as I know, only rough fish unless you belong to one of the native tribes in the state. If you want to try to spear northern you can still go to the UP and spear through the ice for those. I believe non-resident UP license is $10 per day.

Spearing game fish is not allowed in WI. unless you are a tribal member / native american in the ceded territory. It might be allowed in the great lakes not sure about that?

Thanks guys, for some reason I thought it was legal here. Looks like I'll have to head out of state.

I've heard the same thing, Michigan only. The WI/MI boundry waters are not included in this. You need to be strictly in MI waters.

I know you can spear panfish while diving and you can spear for pike on Lake Superior, but that is all that I believe you can do (except for Sturgeon Spearing on the Winnebago System). So no gamefish in the great lakes except for that one situation.
Live to fish.

Just to clarify- you can only spear panfish while skin or scuba diving. Page 8
