Lake Wanahoo or Summit Lake
« on: Dec 12, 2016, 01:31 PM »
Has anyone checked the amount of ice at Wanahoo or Summit?  Wondering if either will ready to go by mid week.  Thanks

Would be careful at Wanahoo.  Wouldn't surprise me if there is still a little open water or thin ice due to geese.

Hey jigthepig, I don't know how to pm or reply to your question but ice in trees are good. Only open water I saw was far south end.  Fishing that Sat stunk. No bites and saw only 1 fish in flasher.

That was a nasty cold day to be out - windy too!

Normally, I'd say that if you don't mark fish at Wanahoo at any particular hole for about 5 minutes (maybe less), you'd better be moving, but I'll give you a pass for this past Saturday.

Any fishing reports?

Was out there yesterday and Holy wind!

There's a good 8-10" just south of the boat ramp.  Everyone else was deep in the trees, so I assume its safe there.  With it being bare ice, as soon as I flipped up my clam, I was drug like 10ft.  Was probably pretty funny for anyone watching.  Had to drill holes just to use the ice shavings to pack around my sled.  Got a small 6" gill when I got there in the afternoon, then right before I was going to give up and go home, a solid 20min of aggressive crappie action around 8pm.  Ended up icing 3, 9-10 inchers.  Nothing on my tip-up.

Thinking about taking some young ones out Friday. Is the ice still safe at Wanahoo?

wondering if anyone has been to Summit lately to give an ice report?  Thinking about heading up there in the morning but won't waste the drive if it isn't fishable.  Its a decent drive for me.

Thanks

I know people who have been on all week.  Not much details but you can get on.  Shoreline sounded a little sketchy so be careful.   Ice is 8+ once on.

I drove by Tuesday morning 1/3 still open water in all the trees.
Never test the depth of the water with both feet.

I was there Sunday and Monday and there was water standing on the ice in the trees.  I checked it with my spud bar and it went right through with zero effort so there might have been an inch of ice under that water but probably less.  About 10 feet to the west it was 6" thick still.  There were a dozen or so people fishing just outside the trees on Sunday.  Only 2 of us on Monday afternoon when I was there.   Hopefully this cold spell will build the ice back up in the trees.

some days I can drink a lot of beer and other days only a case

Fishing Wanahoo as I type.  6-9".  Where water was open only about 1" of ice.  Be careful.  Water clarity isn't that great

I have not been up to Summit this year yet but am willing to bet that it is well locked up. Because of its northern location its usually one of the first lakes to lock up and last to ice-out.

Ice fishing is a subculture, one wouldn't understand until they experienced it...

Flippin and Dippin - I fished the south trees last saturday.  We just had to walk in from the east side.  From the west we would have had to cross the refroze weaker ice, but I would imagine most of that is pretty good now, but I don't know for sure.

Flippin I was out there Monday and Tuesday did a little scouting towards the south end of the trees seemed like 4-5 inches of ice in the trees...we didn't venture to far into the trees because it was dark and couldn't see the ice very good but we did fish in the trees a little...I would think there would be good ice about everywhere out there but one should probably still check in the trees...10 inches plus outside the trees everywhere we fished

Was out at Wanahoo twice this week.  There is some decent fishable ice left, but there are bad spots all over.  We found multiple area that go from safe ice to 1-2 inches within a few feet. If you do go out I would not go into the trees at all and I would use a spud bar for every step.
