Live lining minnows
« on: Dec 10, 2016, 01:01 PM »
A couple ponds in the area are skimmed over right now and I'm looking for something to do this afternoon.  Has anyone ever tried punching a hole from shore (with a big stick or chisel) and gently tossing a shiner in attached to a jig rod in there. I figure it will slowly find its way to slightly deeper water.  I mean what the heck right, couldn't hurt.

Anyone ever tried it?

In Maine you have to be standing on the ice if your fishing through a man made hole, or standing on land when fishing a natural hole.

You do not have to be positioned on the ice to be ice fishing.

Well in either case, it's not an awfully effective method. It turns out that small shiners don't swim too much when they have a hook through them. At least not enough to entice anything to swim up into 2 feet of water.
I guess I'll try again on tuesday.
Pray for ice.

Yea that's right, it's the open water thing I remembered and thought it was same for ice.

I caught a 26" togue in 3 feet of water on a brookie set, keep trying!

I've seen guys use long pieces of pipe to push their bait out under the ice from shore.
Lake Auburn is another place I've heard they do this in the spring.

You would think it would be all one way or the other. The only logic I can use to justify the double standard is that maybe its a safety thing standing on the edge of an ice sheet and trying to open water fish.
