tip ups on thin ice in shallow water
« on: Dec 07, 2016, 05:23 PM »
Hi guys. I'm planning an early ice trip and I'm going to be fishing in shallow water and i don't want the spools of my tip ups to be all the way down in the water and potentially making trout suspicious of my presentation. Any one know any solutions to this issue? maybe a tip up "lift kit" of sorts?
Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

Either use jaw jacker type setups or leave snow and ice around the hole if there is enough.

Plastic bucket with the bottom cut out. Find one just bigger than your hole.

I think the best thing is to get some polar tip ups the adjustable spool height is exactly what you want

I've seen a handful of guys use bricks but I wouldn't want to lug them around. Hell I've even fished with traps out of the water on skinny ice it works just don't let the line freeze gotta be fairly warm

I've never tried this but, have seen lots of guys just lay the tip up on its side with the spool over the hole, also making sure that the flag would pop with out an issue.. Seen this a lot on Tarleton when fishing right off the ramp
I just want to go ice fishing and ignore my adult problems

Put a piece of 2x4 under each leg to raise it up.

Since your going so early there will be limited option in regards to safe ice, most of the ponds or lakes you will most likely be fishing have more than likely been recently stocked. Probably likely wont be that educated and wont even care to notice your tip up spool in the water. These new stockies are not finicky. If it was a 2 trap lake and could be fished legally I would say stealth is important. Its fun to experiment with things though. If you want to build some sort of Rube Goldberg type contraption go for it. The other ideas listed above are great. Laying a tip up on the ice Ive never seen that. I may try that some time. Good luck.

Yep, with a cross-beam type trap you can definitely lean the trap up on the ice with the spool kind of hanging over the edge of the hole. Or on the edge. Done it. Works. And you even still get a flag flapping. Provided nothing freezes up on you. Jaw jacker or adjustable height spool sounds like the most practical approach though. I dont even worry about that stuff all that much though. Maybe I should.!And I don't generally try to target fresh stockies either., but it doesn't seem to screw my catch rate, I don't think? Use black plastic spools maybe? Try to set placements in the vicinity of some logs or rocks or whatever as some 'background' 0r 'profile chatter'? I feel like invisible leader material, knots, and hook metal all concealed under bait is far more important than the presence of a spool sitting under the ice. After all, it could be anything lieing motionless there from a bouy or mooring, to some chunk of crap frozen in. I just don't worry about it that much unless you're talking like 12 inches of water. And why not have some light coming through a hole? Is that really so bad? I guess if it's high-sun reflecting off polished steel or aluminum it might raise fishy eyebrows, but I actually like to see some early morning sun come through a hole and light my eggs up like Christmas lights. Rainbows seems to like edges of open water too at times, where the oxygen is good and flow is happening, so do holes really need to be "blacked out" like an air-raid is coming??? Lol. I'm playing devils advocate, but I'm speculating honestly.

Yep. Laying them sideways works.
I also agree with Mr Harry, light doesnt seem to affect my catch rate. I dont think you need to "black out" your holes. Good luck.
