Yep, fished about 300 west of the boat launch on the south east end, 20" of ice.

Glad to hear the young ones having a great time it can lead to wonderful memories for both of you. Over 50 years ago my Grandfather taught me to ice fish and I haven't missed a season since. Way to go, enjoy those memories they are more precious than we realize at the time.

How many beer are drank versus how many fish are caught in this lake?

i'm running about a 12:1 beer:fish ratio right now.

Had a big Pike snagged on it's side and couldn't get it up the hole. Tried drilling another hole beside it unfortunately cut my line and lost it hooked. I was going to let this great producer go. Will it survive and any suggestions as to how to get the fish out? (Is it true that gaffing is illegal?) Thanks in advance for the feedback companion fishers!

This would be news to me.  The only thing the angling guide says is no spring loaded gaffes.

Best thing is someone catches it within a couple months and gets those hooks out, I'm sure it will survive as long as it's vitals were not punctured. Not much you can do in a situation like that. Could try grabbing it through the ice, gaffing with a hook or hope you can muscle the tail up the hole first and tail it. I would have tried the same thing you had done. A buddy did it to land a big fish, hold the line on the other side of the hole and drill slowly.

J hook on end and no longer than 1.5 m in length are what I can find on gaff regs.

Those hooks most likely will be gone within 48 hours, the pike slime is very corrosive. You can use a J style gaff to land a fish that is hooked on a line, but you can not use a Gaff alone to snare a fish.

If you are looking for the pan i would suggest Mission.  It has been good for 1 - 1.5 pounders this year.

I should have taken your advice Blower, we tried Pasqua in the morning and got nothing so we hopped over to Echo and finished with 2 perch and 1 little walleye. Very slow day but still lots of fun in the nice weather.

Hey everyone,

I'm making the trip from Manitoba to give Echo a try next weekend. We were out there around Christmas time at the fish hatchery in about 14 ft and caught a few walleye, perch and burbot but nothing spectacular. Any updates on the area these days? Sounds like its that slow time of year but just wanted to know if anyone has had any luck lately.

Thanks!

Things have slowed down at katepwa, those that do bit are very light  small hook chose and minnow heads seemto be working for perch and walleye

Fished there yesterday 11:30 till 4. 2 of us caught 12 eyes (2 keepers) and 8 perch! Lost quite a few halfway up also! Bite seemed best after 2 o'clock! Not that many people out as I thought there would be.
