Diefenbaker 2016-2017
« on: Dec 03, 2016, 04:10 PM »
Was out at Palliser Regional Park last weekend and no ice anywhere. The water is really high too.

As usual going to be awhile on Dief.

As long as the wind goes down. It's likely whipping the lake up good the last few days.

Lake is locked up as far as I could see from Prairie Lake.  Pretty rough in the bay there... Looks like the ice busted up a few times.  Didn't have time to venture out and check the thickness.

Locals that live north of the river use the ice road to get across at Beaver flats, rather than drive west to the Landing.

fished north of elbow on sunday, was slow but managed 5 pike and a walleye. Walleye was 23" and biggest pike was 39" and FAT. Marked fish fairly consistently all day, and lost a few. Ice was 10" further into the bay and 4" near the mouth. You couldnt pay me enough to walk on the main lake ice right now

Thanks guess I'll just fish where I can...No interest in making history by ending up at the bottom of the lake.

A measured 12 inches of ice in the area of Coteau.
Couple of pike caught.
One burbot and a couple trout as well as multiple white fish on the camera.

Any tips to catching whitefish at Diefenbaker?
Watched a few looking for grubs in the bottom but they mostly cruise by without interest. Most interest I had was in a brown double tailed jig 4 feet off the bottom I was using for a while to imitate crayfish.
Tried spreader with minnows.

What sort of depth was the 12" in?.

Thanks for the tip.

Ice thickness was in 15 to 17 feet of water
Area was in the channel where the bay enters the big lake

Whitefish is more interested in biting swivel.  I jig a small spoon (brand doesn't matter) and an optional secondary small lure (a wireworm, a hook dressed with a small grub, etc) one foot up the line.
