Antifreeze for my electric drill (Clam Plate Mods)
« on: Sep 28, 2016, 11:13 AM »

I've never minded my drill setting out in the cold, but I've never been happy about it when it starts snowing really bad or snow is blowing around a lot...

So I came up with this to solve those issues.. If you look close you can also see the rubber grommet I put on the throttle trigger for a stop as well..

Not pretty but the price was right...

I don't think I'll have any overheating issues, I've used the same drill outside in the sun when it's 95° in the shade. Also I'll be running the gear box so it won't be working nearly as hard..

Thanks for looking!

Anyone else have any cool mods/hacks for the clam plate? Post em please!

Almost forgot, I bought two nylock nuts for the u bolt that holds the drill handle, then moved the plastic wing nuts to the outside to hold the cover on..

Probably for the sideplate that holds the drill in place.
Not a bad idea at all here. Take care of your gear, and your gear will take care of you right?

Awesome idea Scratcher, I may do the same to mine. It would look better with the extension on though, LOL.  ;)

Exactly correct.. This is the latest generation of the plate.. Earlier generation plates would completely fit under the cover.. Thanks!!

Just wanted to add, it took me two tries to get it right.. I screwed up the first one...

Add the screw holes last, once it's on you can feel the screws through the plastic...

Same reason I don't leave my craftsman tools sit in the rain..

If they never need to be replaced, all the better, in my opinion..

Thanks JK!

Now I just have to put a couple cool stickers on it.. Maybe something like No Fat Chicks lol...

With electric augers taking the scene over, I'm afraid auger dogging will be a lost art too...

Ice Scratcher....This idea is OUTSTANDING!!!  I just put together an electric drill setup with the Milwaukee M18 and Clam drill plate.  I used the setup for the first time yesterday.  When I left the house the prediction for snow was 40%.  After about an hour on the ice I was in a white out blizzard.  I started to worry about my new drill getting soaked.  I ended up putting the auger inside the shanty...but it really didn't fit all that well.  Have you had any problems with your drill overheating?

Thanks, glad you like the idea..

Haven't had any overheating issues because it only drilled 4 inches before the Clam gearbox went to hell.. It's been parked just like that since..

I doubt the drill would overheat, especially with the gearbox.. I run these drills in the full sun all day at 92°F and haven't had any issues, except once drilling 40 holes in concrete footers for 1/2" anchors, had to let her cool down for a minute..

You could cut vents, or louvers, to help keep it cooler if there was any issues..

I have another drill I'm running on a 6" till they fix the gear box that I bought the clam plate for.. Fourth season using that way...
