OK. Trying to find a good place to bring a group of 8-10 in February.

What is the fishing like there in February?

Any advice?

Is it worth the trip from Bangor?

always worth the trip fish or not. Greenland Cove Cabins right in the cove. Nice folks. Fishing there is no different there than anywhere else it's hot or cold. "The Deep Hole" tends to get a lot of pressure when theres good ice.  If you do go, head down the lake to 440 Sandy Beach. We tend to fish out front of my camp and one can locate a beverage with ease-

Of course its worth the trip from Bangor.  That's just a hop skip and a jump.  those are easy day trips, don't even need a place to stay.  haha

I stayed at Cowgers last year. Its a couple hundred yards further in the cove then Greenland Cove cabins. So the areas you would be fishing on the lake are about the same.

How do the cabins at Cowgers compare to Greenland Cove?

The online photos look like Cowgers might be nicer cabins.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

From what I see the Canadian border is in the deep hole and Is only 1600ft out from shore to the closet point of the border. I have made contact with the border angents and they say be carefull its 1000. dollar fine and is only the Canadian police enforcing it,.. They need to define the darn line then. The US Border patrol even say they do not have all the spacifics yet. GPS can be way off at times and google maps are bogus. :(

I stand corrected. So the "old days" of stay out of their coves are apparently over.

Sounds like one needs to be careful! A $1000 fine would be awful!  I'll bring my passport!!  ;)

I've reported from a boat a couple times up there. Here's the information for reporting on the water.
http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/travel-voyage/pb-pp-eng.html

This page appears to be specific for boats, and there does not appear to be anything on the website specifically for crossing over frozen water.

You can register online with Canadian border patrol by emailing them a copy of your birth certificate or passport. When you do so, you don't get any confirmation that they've received it and put it in the system. You do not need a passport if you are a US citizen. When you are about to cross into Canada, you need to call them and wait in the queue. They'll ask who you are, who you are with, what your purpose is and if you've got alcohol, tobacco, firearms or $10,000 in cash. Then, they give you a reporting number. As I understand it, you are good as long as you are on the water, but the second you touch shore in the US, you need to call back and get another authorization.
There are a lot of grey areas, and you should probably call them at 1-888-226-7277 if you have any questions.

Yes the new laws . Also I believe you need a new Brunswick fishing license too  :-\ there has been some serious drug running across the lake from what I've heard . Alot of rumors going around about a person crossing in orient. Gonna be a cluster up there for awhile! The border patrol was out alot early Saturday a.m. not sure what was going on

How do you go about getting a New Brunswick fishing license without going there?  Can it be done online?

A passport doesn't help you at all. You need to enter Canada at an immigration center.

robbfisher- Do you have a number to call?

I went online last night and found out that you can apply online for a non-resident ice fishing only license. It cost $23.  Worth the price to avoid an international incident!!   ::)

this makes no sense! glazier lake up our way is completely different. as long as you aren't inside a cove on the canadian side or standing on their shore you're legal. this is new brunswick also. makes a hell of a lot more sense than this reg.!

Jacksmelt look at the international boundaries on google earth and you will see why they are so different E. Grand line zigs and zags all over the water and Glazier goes in a line up the middle.

thats the thing. there is no line on glazier. as long as you aren't inside of a cove on the canadian side or on canadian ground your legal. been like that as long as i can remember.  now beau lake , which is on the quebec/ us border, just upstream from glazier, has a similar law to east grand with a line down the middle. to me the lakes on the us/ nb border should be the same. just wonder why they aren't?

Could someone post some links or info regarding the new Canadian Laws (or at least how they are being enforced) on East Grand?

Thanks,
MD

And as he says, it's mostly for open water....Unless something has changed drastically (new laws?) within the last year, I wasn't aware that things were going to be any different from last year.
Stay out of the Canadian coves, don't set foot on Canadian soil, don't be meeting folks from Canada in the middle of the lake (i.e. don't have tracks leading back and forth from where you are
fishing to the Canadian shore).  But hey, maybe something has changed.  Both sides have been jumpy the last few years....with the frequent overflights and border patrol checks in the middle
of the lake....

Oh well.  Be sure to get your ice auger milfoil stickers, and be sure to register your ice shacks.

MD
