Insulated Bait Bucket
« on: Aug 31, 2016, 09:08 AM »
I was wondering what everyone likes for (minnow)bait buckets on the ice. Is there some good insulated options if you are "running and gunning"?

Cheers

Engel live bait coolers are hard to beat, thought I think the cool bubbles aerator is better than the one the Engels come with.
Another option is to drill an old lunch cooler and silicon in a cool bubbles aerator, if you are looking for a more affordable option. Works all the same.

Frabill makes two nice insulated bait buckets, one with an aerator and one without.  The nice thing about these is the bucket is plastic and has the foam insulation inside so it's protected.

Without the aerator at Walmart for $9.96

With the aerator at Walmart for S20.96:

Use a insulated coleman 1 gallon water jug. Usually pay about $8-$9 for one.

A small square cooler.  Round buckets in a sled isn't the best use of space.

I use the 19 QT Engel.  Works well.  I bought a cheapo pump at a pet store that I run when at home instead of the Engel pump just to try and extend the Engel pump's life.  It's A LOT more expensive to replace than a run of the mill aerator from the pet store.  The 19QT is at a really good price on Amazon right now too - $65.  I think I paid almost $90. for mine.

I use one of these inside of a 6 gallon bucket with a tight lid..

http://www.nicklowswholesale.com/wholesale-plastilite-10-quart-champagne-foam-minnow-bucket.html

Lasts forever with the wire frame, and anything that sloshes out is caught in the 6 gallon bucket, just pour it back in...

A lot of other hardcore Erie guys use one of these..

http://www.target.com/p/igloo-5-gallon-beverage-cooler/-/A-13273931

Bubblers are unnecessary for winter time I've found.. I've kept minnows over a month without any bubblers.. Keeping the water changed if far more important than bubbles in my opinion...

The container really depends on your method of transportation, and whether or not you will be jumping pressure cracks and running miles to get to the looting grounds..

Me too and Ditto!  I drilled a hole in the lid and ran the air line thru - small aerator double stick velcro'd to the lid... if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy!!

Just put your bucket in a black plastic bag and your minnows will be great!

I just use a small cooler, similar to this  https://www.amazon.com/Coleman-FlipLid-6-Personal-Cooler/dp/B00363X3F2/ref=pd_sim_468_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=726R30JRMDTWAFW6ARCH

I drilled a hole in the side, towards the top to run my aerator hose through, but I'm still trying to figure out a good way to incorporate a latch or something to keep the lid from popping open while running on the ATV.  Anybody have any suggestions?

These work great for cooler lids

A bungee cord will work fine, I'd put two on so it sits level.

The problem I have found with the buckets that have the foam inserts is they seep water through the  bottom and the sides and will freeze to the inside of the plastic pail. I have made a metal insert aprox 1 inch less diameter of the bucket . Soldered the bottom and seam water tight and fabricated a hinged cover with clasp. I then fitted the metal container into the bucket and filled the cavity with spray foam. This worked great for me winter and summer.

Oops is too late.

I have been using the Frabill Aqualife bait station and love it. It is a bit heavy for runnin and gunnin so I take an extra large bait puck when I venture away from our camp area....it holds a few minnows with water and allows me to be mobile until I find where the bite is.

Plano bait bucket I bought a few years ago that was insulated. Put a Mr. Bubbles on it and works great.

Use a insulated coleman 1 gallon water jug. Usually pay about $8-$9 for one.

Same here ....  if i tipup fish i stay in one place

I got a 5 gallon insulated cooler off of Craigslist for $10

I find the time in the car when the temp fluctuates so much kills the bait - the insulated cooler is perfect.

Same here. The lid screws on to make it more spill resistant.

I also like not having to replace any foam liners. And although I never run an aerator on the ice, the spigot on top works just fine for running bubbler tubes through for when I get home.

I do like the idea that it's insulated.   But if water gets on the threads it might be trouble for you if you don't have a heated shack.

Yeah I hear ya.. I'm hoping the plastic is slick enough as to where the ice has nothing to grab on..

I use one if I have the shack, in the open it is hopeless.

I take the hinges off my plastic coolers backside and replace them with  folded over strap from a ratchet strap and screw them on as the lid hinges. I always end up having my lid hinges snap in the -20 degrees days I fish in.......The straps never break in the cold and you can be as ruff as you want with them :-).
Its all fun and games until someone loses a walleye.......
