How many miles is too many on a snowmobile?
« on: Aug 15, 2016, 03:37 PM »
I have absolutely no experience with a snowmobile but am beginning to look for an ice fishing sled.  I saw an ad for a 2006 Skidoo with a 550 fan with 2900 miles.  Is that a lot?  Would there be any thing I'd be wise to do to it other than an extensive service job?  I've been searching for info in the Ice Fishing Transportation section looking for advice and pros and cons.  It seems this sled would be acceptable for most members knowledgable in snowmobiles.  Just looking for affirmation I guess. What say you all?

I like to do top ends at about 5000 miles at least inspect them.that way I keep build/maintanence cost low with a quick cylinder hone and new rings/pistons if the skirts look bad or scuffed.instead  of going to long and scoring the cylinders or having to bore them and get new pistons.2900 miles is just broken in.

Truth, if well taken care of those 550 fans are very reliable.

Wow. your question is like deja vu. I bought my first sled last year, a ski-doo with 2900 miles (500 liquid). Ive never owned a sled before. I put about $500. into a tune up, new wear bars, battery, etc. It ran great, and I'm looking forward to this winter! Wondering why I waited so long to get a sled, and hoping for a little more snow this year.

Our rule of thumb is for skidoo Polaris ans cats.  8000km is pushing it.  If a yamaha 20,000km
you might need rings in the future.    The

I had an 81 Arctic Cat Jag with 3200 miles on it. Everything was beat to poop except the motor. Miles with ATV's and sleds is sorta relative.
