Glacial Lakes, SD
« on: May 31, 2016, 12:30 PM »
I talked my wife into a long weekend staying in Webster for July 7, 8 & 9.

Is there any way I can see if these lakes have boat ramps?  I'll be trying to stick to the smaller lakes since I don't have a large boat and motor, and the previous 2 times I've been ice fishing.

From what I've heard, there's a lot of places that don't have actual ramps, or "Right of Way", which I don't even know means.

Any help would be appreciated.

1st place to look is google earth.
Ramps and access points usually show up pretty well.
Other than that would be to ask local bait shops.

The SD Game Fish and Parks site also has some great info on it.  It has been a while since I was last on the site but I believe it does show lakes that have ramps.  Many lakes also have private paid access (pay box kind of thing).  Many of these lakes have sprouted up in the last 10 years or so.  As a result, many have roads that go right down into them from before the lakes were there.  Those "roads" now have become access points.

Here is a little helpful info . Do not leave any of your stuff where people can steal them . Someone stole a guys trailer spare this last weekend and tried to take the tires off the trailer. Make sure the lakes you are going on are public , the game and fish basically shut 2 of them down this spring.

Thanks for the heads up Rags.

If I could ask, what do you mean they shut down the lake?  A public lake?

Closed it to fishing.
We have a couple of lakes up here that the ENR have closed.
They use them for scientific purposes here.
Some places they shut down lakes on a rotating basis so they don't get over fished.

Unfortunately it is not for scientific purposes.  There was a court order that prohibits public access to Duerre Slough and Jesse Slough in Troy Township in Day County.  There is a lot of controversy around this court order so I will leave it at that.  There are a lot of lakes in this area that could be affected by this court order.  If you look at the SD GFP site below there is a letter to Anglers, Map of the Land Boundaries and a Order and Final Judgement Document there.  I would avoid the area documented there.  Plenty of other areas to fish in that region of SD.

Thanks for that info; that's really helpful.

I'm planning on staying on the well marked lakes with ramps because it sounds like there's a lot of controversy on what the angler thinks is permissible versus the landowner when launching from a "Right of Way".

I believe it is now illegal to launch a boat from a road ditch in Day County also.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.
