I got this yesterday for $5. I just don't know how to start it.   Any tips?

So basically put the long lighter right by the honey comb part?

Any idea how much the new valve is?  And is it something the place I will get it filled at will replace or can I just by one my self?

Crap...I was pretty excited about the tank.  Heater was just a bonus.

You will not be able to remove the valve from the tank - it is in soo tight that you would break the valve off at the treads - check the manufacture date on the tank - the 5 star wheel which opens and closes the valve tells us that the tank is older than 10 years - outdated by federal regs. - use up what gas is inside and buy a new one with all the safety goodies inside

Best option:exchange the tank for an updated and prefilled tank at one of the local quickstops. Keep in mind the exchange tanks usually only have 15-16lbs and not 20.It's usually still much cheaper than a brand new tank.

After you get a new tank.

Turn on valve and then turn on heater. Push and hold silver button, Light heater (BBQ lighter or matches.)
Continue holding silver button for about 15 seconds and the release. The heater should continue running.
If you release too early the heater will shut off because the thermo  couple is not up to temp yet.

This tank is a 5 lb tank.   Not sure if everyone missed that.

Drifter nailed the lighting procedure.

Before you six the tank take it in to your local propane vendor. A real one not an exchange or like that, the folks that fill the bulk hot dogs..... They can usually update the valve and re-certify portable tanks. The last one I did was $17.50 but that was a few years back..
To fish or not to fish? That's a stupid question!

1 The tank is the old style, that are no longer refillable 2 to light it you would need to push in the silver stem, which will feed gas into the head, once it lights you need to hold that stem in to keep gas flowing, until it heats up, once you can release that stem, then you can advance from the low to the higher settings.  You can put that head onto a newer tank.  The tubing is a thermal couple, once its hot it allows the valve to stay open.  Good Luck.  Yup Drifter nailed the startup, I have the exact setup but with the newer tank valve.

Yep, especially if it is a 5#er as replacement is now about $80 on one of them.
Take it into a place like Superior Propane and they can re-certify it.
