Fresh Lobster!
« on: Mar 30, 2016, 11:49 AM »
I couldn't pass up a +9*C day so I headed north by myself to explore new waters. I managed to land 4 different species but the best was my first MA Burbot at a hefty 34 inches. The fight on my ML St-Croix rod was scary. I was hoping it would't snap as this 20 lb Burbot kept making Pike like runs. My Okuma reel was screaming while I did my best to keep the line centered in the 10 inch hole. I was shocked when the head came up and filled the 10 inch hole  :o
I've never seen any Burbot this size before but happy it would provide plenty of "poor man's lobster" for my family.

I used to catch burbot years ago and thought they were trash.  Wish I had known better then.  I'd like to try them sometime.

That's a Monster!   I ate my first Burbot about a month ago.... It will definitely be a species I target from now on, it was very tasty!

I was the same way until my fishing friends from Portage la Prairie showed me how it's done! Forever grateful. Now, I get excited when I land one with wide shoulders  ;D Great eats!

Very nice burbot.  Congratulations, that will make a lot of fish and chips!

What did you catch it on?

Congrats Blue that's a monster Mariah. Hope it tasted good, I hooked into some at west hawk last week but haven't had the kahonies to eat them yet. Maybe one day with alot of garlic butter and beer to chase it down.

IMO, those skinny black Mariahs from West Hawk are not worth cleaning to eat. You need the ones with big backstraps.

Well Firefighter it's now been 2 seasons since we wet a line together so you have lots of catching up to do  ;D I miss those late afternoon walk-ons on LK Wpg and those perch hunts on Lk MB and the Shoals. No excuses next year as I'll be available any day of the week. That's one of the perks of retirement  :woot:

Just cut out the backstraps and remove the skin.
