Scratched the itch
« on: Mar 21, 2016, 08:45 AM »
Left my house in Portland at 12:15PM, got up to Caratunk at 2:45PM. Fished 3:00-6:45 and pulled back into my driveway at 9:15PM. A couple 10 inch brook trout, a small togue, one last chance to sit in my shelter drinkin beers with the buddy heater cranked. Maybe next weekend I'll cruise up to the county

Pleasant Pond?

Ice looks great.  I am hoping to get out one last time this weekend.

Ice was variable. Anywhere between 7-12 inches. I did notice that the quality of the ice was very suspect. I chiseled out a nice 8 inch hole, got an 8 inch wide by 8 inch thick block of ice out of the hole. I stepped on that chunk of ice, and it straight crumbled under my foot. I would not have run a sled just because of how soft everything was.

A buddy of mine has a camp up there, last weekend (March 12/13) we drilled 15 inches of hard ice. This Saturday, my augur dipped through like butter. The ice wasn't nearly as hard. I am not an ice strength expert, but I can tell you that I was shocked at the difference a week made (even with relatively cold temps besides one 50 degree day). I am sure with the temps this week, you would go drill 10 inches average next weekend too and be just fine. The best thing I can say is that the edges were solid, and that shouldn't change.

Ya, temps this week shouldn't affect it too much.  Looks like it's staying pretty chilly up there this week.
