Final Trip Of the Season Managed to avoid the Skunk
« on: Mar 06, 2016, 07:54 PM »
Not really happy to be throwing in the towel but the forecasted temps do not look good. Figured I would fish all day today and make the best of it. Grabbed my bait last night to save time. I was on the ice by 0600, I was drilling a bunch of holes shallow 3-6 ft near the drop off,  and very shallow at 1 ft, managed to bottom out my new auger into the sand as this is a newer area for me. I was worried my trip was done but the sand did not faze my finbore blades one bit. Had I been using my old auger my trip would have been over.  Had a hit and spit at 0700, he chewed up my smelt pretty good. I rebaited and about a half hr later he was back for more. Managed My best Rainbow of the season this year, (thankful for that as I didn't get many bows this year). Took a few pics then went for my tape measure, he was tired of the photo op and decided to flip over and back down the hole for a self release. Moved out to deeper waters looking for WP but never found them. I did manage to get 2 nice YP and 2 SMB all on swedish pimple tipped with waxies. Headed back to shallows at 3pm and had a flag at 330 right near where I got my 1st bow. Smelt was chewed up bad, re baited and walked away, turned around flag was up, ran over this time smelt was gone, immediately re baited dropped it down walked away and wham it was screaming off line, I set the hook felt a nice fish and then he came off. I tried for a 4th time but he was not interested. Smelt seemed to be the way to go today, no flags on eggs at all. Great day on the ice, good way to wrap up my season. See you guys at the gathering. Fish pictures are same fish just different color perspectives.

Lately  on newfound, eggs haven't been producing anything more than hit and spits. Earlier in the season I was catching almost every rainbow that hit a salmon egg tip up and now I am lucky to go 1 for 5 with flags on salmon eggs.  ??? I am doing everything exactly the same as I did earlier in the season so it's not a technical/fishing gear error

Yea Im learning that its just whatever they want I guess and its not always the same. Usually I score with eggs but today smelt was king the bows wouldnt touch the eggs I put on bottom but took smelt in a heart beat . Sadly I did not fish newfound this season. It just never panned out. Hope to troll it soon though.

Sounds like a pretty good last outing. We sure had beautiful weather for it today. Beautiful bow. Good to hear somebody was catchin good fish today, cause it sure wasnt me. I got the "skunk" today, minus one little bass on a bow set.

Nice job Wayne. Good thing that you didn't have your Nils you would have been down and out.

It was a good afternoon brother.  Would have liked to see that fish that was nagging that one trap.  Oh well, he will be there for next year.  Glad I did not go O for the season with that monster 8" fallfish saving the day!!!
