They like meat- a worm, a piece of fish, or pork or chicken or a spike, any of those on the hooks of a shiny jig will attract them if they're around. I've never found them to be finicky eaters.
May the fish be with you.

They'll eat anything you put under the ice, including small children, ATV's & trucks that break thru, candy wrappers left blowing across the ice, cigarette butts, seagulls and various other sundries...

They like meat.  We've had good luck in the past with small chunks of nightcrawler or spikes on tungsten jigs.  The worms are easier for me to handle than spikes, though.  I'm sure wax worms would work, too.

I like to use "fatheads" on a bibbit.......but my buddy always out fishes me he just uses a bibbit. It's more about the correct depth when your on a school they will eat anything

They are usually suspended.
When they are suspended, a fish finder/ flasher is absolutely key. If you aren't using one, then you could have a big school of whites move through a couple feet above your jig and you would never know that they were there.
Perch bait- a small minnow that can have big results in the ice fishing game.  :icefish:

In general I find them near structure, like an underwater bank or ridge where the depth goes from 60-ish to 40-ish feet deep in a short space. To narrow it down further there is always a part of such a structure (especially in a larger lake like Champlain) where there's a weird current (one that doesn't necessarily follow the normal flow for that lake) and water rising upward on the structure as a result. If you find the current, you'll find perch and you'll find them all year long. You'll also find walleyes, bass, trout, etc. there. The perch will be keeping mixed company and will come in waves when the bait will not have time to settle before you have a fish on and then shut off, only to start up again the same way after a while. Usually during those shut-downs I'll drop a spoon or a jig and see if I can catch whatever bigger fish has driven them away.

This is how I find perch without a "flasher".  :)
May the fish be with you.

We caught about 80 of them yesterday.
Just off kilcare.access.
In about 19 fow.they were suspended in about
10 feet.we use an lx7 flasher.I don't think we
Would have caught as many without it. They came
In waves.sometimes the flasher would go nuts
And read the bottom as 10 ft.I am assuming
It was thinking the school was the bottom.
Most everyone else was out by the green bouy.
Off Hathaway pt.this is a rock shoal mkr.
Goes from 2 feet to 25 fow.quickly there.
So what spot says makes sense.
Don't know how those guys did.??
The ice was shifting big time.major cracks.oozing water.
Don't think it will be around much longer.

Yes I was out there also today. My last day this season.
Fished for 3 hours almost 2 1/2 buckets.
Fish came in waves caught them on a orange and white bibbot tipped with red maki plastic.
Good last day.
Ice is getting unsafe.

Were you in the crowd? I tried a similar jig and plastic setup and had no interest.  I did fine on a blue and silver spoon tipped with spikes. Had to work the fish to get them to bite.

I was there early just after light.
Bite shut off when the crowd starting showing up around 8:30/9:00
First hour it was one after another, after that had to work for them.

I was supposed to be there early, had a slow member in the group. Bite was definitely best before 9. Time to clean some fish!

That's why I usually fish by myself can't stand waiting for people.

Finding fish without a fish finder is a lot about understanding the area you're in and the habits of whatever you're after. When you find fish in a particular place they're there for a reason and knowing the reason is a huge step toward being able to find those fish reliably even in areas you aren't familiar with. As the earlier post said, finding an up-swelling of current is an excellent start. In a larger lake there are always places with currents that don't really make sense, but they're there. The whole lake may flow northward, but suddenly you're swimming and exploring with a snorkel and a mask and you encounter a current which seems to flow the opposite way. Finding such a current that flows onto a rise in the bottom terrain will almost always put you on the fish. The current pushes the water upward, drawing plankton with it, and baitfish follow the plankton. Following those baitfish will be lots of bigger fish. :)
May the fish be with you.
