2016 Musky
« on: Feb 23, 2016, 10:36 AM »
The ice is pretty much shot in my area so I figured I'd post some pics from this season. I had my best year ever for musky, 13 fish, 2 tigers and 6 fish over 40". I caught all but 2 fish on suckers. Here are a few of the big ones. I can't wait until next year!

And Wisconsin closes the season in the south region Jan 1 and north region Dec 1. Freaking shame, it's actually illegal to take them out of the hole for pics..... "Immediate Release".

Congrats on a great season.

That sucks you can't target them but I get why. Most people aren't prepared to catch a musky and don't know how to handle them. I bring a bag with everything I need to every flag. The bag has long pliers, jaw spreaders, boga grip, knife, tape measure and extra rigs. I also use a mat/sling that is designed for carp. Letting them flop around on hard ice can seriously damage the fish, so the mat is great for protecting them plus it has handles so you can weigh the fish without hanging them by the jaw. I use single hooks too, I've seen several quick strike rigs get swallowed and that's a death sentence for the fish. I gut hook them occasionaly but single hooks are easy to get out of the gut with some practice. I also don't fish on really cold days because I don't want the eyes or gills to freeze. If I do catch one when it's cold I hold the fish under water on the boga while I unhook them. I see a lot of people mistreating pike and musky on the ice so I can see why they have that rule. It sucks when you see people letting them flop around and freeze on the ice. We found a dead 43" ski a few days ago. Sucks when you see that.

Had my Personal Best and through the ice to top it off of 40 inches on a BIG LIVE BAIT! I know a lot of people catch them on all different size baits but the BIG BAIT=BIG FISH def applies to Musky IMO for sure! Our baits are so large many people would be happy if they caught something that big through the ice!!! LOL Many hours are spent gathering baits and keeping them but it's well worth it when you reap the rewards!!! GREAT TIMES MATT!!!!!!

I came up the first week it was safe, January 7th. First day I it a 37 and my buddy got a 42" 20lb pike. 2 days later my buddy had a dead stick out with a dead bait. The rod got sucked down the hole with a $700 Van Stall reel on it. After about an hour of drilling and looking down holes my buddy spotted the rod and jigged it up wih a 35" pike on the other end. One of the sickest things I've seen through the ice. I wanted to come back up to CT this weekend but I'm hearing everything is shot.

Beautiful looking fish, and great to see the care in managing them, so that one day you catch them again and even bigger.
