homemade tip up?
« on: Feb 11, 2016, 02:09 PM »
I made a few jaw jacker type tip ups and im wondering what your guys thoughts are on these type of tipups?  Im fishing pretty big baits for pike and curious in regards to the set-up. The line is hanging on the trigger so there wont be no delay in the rod setting the hook. Im using quick strike rigs on them. What are your experiences with these?  Thx

Usually, pike move off a bit with the bait, stop and turn the bait in their mouth, taking it well enough for a hook-set.

Let us know how this works out for you, Whale.    Please.

Maybe it's time for you to complete your profile by adding a location.      ;)2

I have made some before. If you add a picture it would help.

The ones I have made have a hook style trigger. They work well on trout, but not much else in my experience.
Most of the experience I have is with perch and it will rip the bait right out of their mouth no matter how small it is or what hook you use.

Trout are cruisers, when they take the bait, they slam it and keep on swimming. They don't sit there for a while like panfish and bass, or mess with it in their mouth like pike. So jaw jackers work well for them.

You can add a slip float to weigh the line down to put slack in it.

I just copied one i found off the internet.  havent tried it yet, but when im tipup fishing for pike most times i dont hitem right away and wait a bit before i set on a pike.  the set-up i built will set right away.  ive seen the bobber idea, but the bait i use are very large.  hopefully the 2 pics i posted shows u how it works, very simple trigger and simple to make.

Seeing that 'rig' set with two trebles is a bit frightening.     :woot: :cookoo:

Maybe a bit of forethought on safety is in order.      :callcops:

I made that mistake. Shot a bluegill jig into my thumb. Dont be like me, dont set them in the house with a hook tied on. Also dont lean over it while setting! My buddy took a rod to the nose when a bass hit when he set his.

Saw a picture of one thought it was very simple, no base just a bit of wire.
If you live in Minnesota, don't use one, MN only state in ice states where they are illegal.

I use the Quickset Automatic Hooksetters. Price is right. Works best with the mono loop attached to your rod tip. Make a base from 1x4 and a pvc rod holder.

God grant me strength to catch a fish
So large that even I
When telling of it afterwards
May never need to lie.
