man through the ice on Pequawket Pond
« on: Feb 09, 2016, 09:10 PM »
Tonight I came out of a meeting near Pequawket Pond in Conway (Near the dam) and I heard someone yelling for help. I grabbed my phone and called 911. While I did that my friend ran to the fire department. There was a guy who fell through the ice right behind the fire department. I started going towards him while on the phone with 911. I tried to grab a branch near the shore to reach out to him and I fell through. The ice was less than 2" thick. I was over my head. I self-rescued and stayed on the ice yelling instructions to the guy. He was in a panic. The fire department got on the ice, threw some ropes out and the guy went under. They spent an hour trying to get to him, several firemen went through in their cold water gear and couldn't get him. He didn't make it. I am cold, tired and feel terrible for the guys family. Please remember, places that were safe a year ago are not the same today. Use caution on the ice....I will be haunted by this event..

Agreed sounds like you did everything you could have. Considering it was night time. You have courage. I can only imagine how you will re live this moment. Sad news. I imagine that you are rattled. Too bad for him and his family

Thanks for the support, of course I keep replaying the event over in my head...

I will be OK, just wish someone could have saved him. The spot he fell in on is more river than pond and was liquid two days ago... I bet he took that short cut before and thought he was safe..

Although no one can stop you from feeling the way you do, please remember that you risked your own life to try to save another. That's what hero's do. You did nothing wrong. You are lucky to be here to tell us about this. Hug your loved ones tight and be thankful there weren't 2 bodies to recover. Thank you.

you will never forget it... but you have the satisfaction of knowing that had you not been there... someone may have filed a missing persons report never knowing what happened to their loved one...

Scary situation for sure, I hope you get beyond what you have seen and know that you did more than a lot would have. Thanks for being a real sportsman, and a good person.
