Ok maybe not zombies.. With all the doom and gloom about ice conditions and zombageddon, i was happy to find a solid 6in of local ice on one of my super secret spots.

Allan and I hit the ice at 5am. It was chilly with temps in the teens. No wind made it much easier setting up. Allan was on a jigging mission as time was short. I setup my tip ups with a few shiners I had left. Jigging once again proved to yield the more quality fish of the day. I had the biggest bass (was still small by my standards) and Allan was able to pull up a 14" crappie. There were multiple smaller bass and some larger slime darts on the tilts.

Fun quick trip, plenty of ice, but picked all the way out, just to make sure. Will had 4 tilts out and at one point all 4 were flag up and many times it was 3 flags at once... The jigging was great with many fish moving through, The few times I dropped a small Pimple it was sunfish time and not all that big. Sticking with the Chubby Darter, helped get the bigger fish... We also got some nice perch, but none like last week... I think it will be a while before we are in 15+" yellow perch again!

Nice job guys! I opted for open water again. I'm sure i coulda found some fishable ice but when there's a lot of sketchy ice around and open water available i'd rather just play it safe. Ended up having a decent day with a bunch of pickerel and a few small bass.

Open water crossed my mind too, especially with mid day temps in the 40s. But that would mean walking the river thru snow and temps in the teens in the AM. Made the choice to hit the ice a little easier. I checked this spot yesterday afternoon. When i go there today i check the holes i made to see how much ice was made over night. There was a good 3/4" skim over each hole.
