Best size rod for making a homemade jawjacker?
« on: Feb 04, 2016, 08:22 PM »
Now that we are allowed to have 7 ice fishing devices of any kind here in lovely overpriced NY, I was thinking about making a jawjacker to double my chances when hole hoping with electronics or just to set up when tip up fishing.
Any suggestions on the size and style of rod best for this type of device would be appreciated.
As of now, 30" mH sounds about right for the trout and walleye that i target. Considering the Berkeley Lighting rod 32".
Suggestions and advice? ???

Ugly Stick is the way to go. I use the M and MH.

the ones that we make work great, tailor made to the length of the rod, you bottom "support" piece just needs to be the same length as the rod, and the height of the "pole holder" determines how much power the rod is loaded with.

I don't think it's the length that matters but more of how the rod bends. With that said I also use ugly sticks not the new g2 or whatever they are called but the older style. I use a med/heavy and a light. Both work great

I have talked to the owner of Jawjacker in Rigby Idaho. I met him one day while fishing on Henry's Lake in Idaho. He said when he first built these he was specifying these to be used on rods in the 24"-32" medium to medium/heavy range.
